Dublin, Ireland. The 1916 Easter Rising. The Dublin GPO is under heavy fire from British forces. Eventually Irish volunteers realise they have been fighting a hopeless battle and surrender. The leaders of the rebellion are executed, while the others who took part in the Rising are shipped off to England and imprisoned. Some time later, we witness the arrival of Michael Collins back in Ireland with a plan that will finally rid Ireland of the British occupation. What begins is a geurilla war lasting almost three years. We witness the truce called by the British when all hope was lost by the Irish of succeeding. We witness the apparent of success of Collins' campaign and the rejection of its terms by some members of The Dáil, leading to a civil war which cost the life of Collins when he attempted to end the conflict. This is Neil Jordan's excellent film based on the life of Michael Collins. He had waited almost ten years before he could finally get this project under way, and had Liam Neeson in mind as the Irish patriot almost the entire time. The director was very cautious when filming not to show either the British forces of Collins' in a particularly good light. He was unbiased in showing that both sides in the battle were forced to do what they did. Unfortuantely, this led to some inconsistenices, which does happen when film are made based on people's lives. That aside, we are given an amazing trip into the lives of one of Ireland's greatest heroes, whose life was cut pointlessly short in the very place where he was born.
