Advantages: just a geat film
Disadvantages: you'll need a box of tissues for the ending!
I can always rember the first time i saw Midnight Cowboy, I can rember sitting down with my Mum to watch this and her telling me how she'd first seen it at the odeon back in 1969 with Rosie from next door and that it was probably one of her favourite films, Mum also went and got a box of tissue's towards the end of the film....which wasnt like her at all! Midnight Cowboy, tells the story of Joe Buck played by the very young looking Jon Voight, who travells from small town USA to the Big Apple to seek his fortune. The opening scences are beautifully filmed, show Joe Buck escaping life in small town USA, where he was a "short order cook", the opening scence show him travelling up to New York on a greyhound bus on what appears to be a two day journey, Joe is the only one who makes the journey all the way to the big apple so there is loads of comings and goings. Joe Buck, is incredibile niave, he's basically come to New York yo make his fortune as a high class male escort, the next part of the film shows his first encounter with a very pampered poodle and her 5th ave owner equally pampered and the misunderstandind that occurs. Joe mets Enrico Ritzo or Ratso played by Dustin Hoffman in a seedie bar where Ratso promptly rips him off thinking he'll never see him again. They end up becoming friends. They set about fullfilling there dream of making lots of money and retiring to Florida, Ratso believing that every thing will be ok if they can make it to Florida. There are some brilliant scence's of so called 60's parties. Throw out the film you know that Ratso is not in the best of health. Things basically go pear shaped for them and they end up living in misery in a condemed squat in the middle of winter. Joe Buck in the end gets the money by very unsavoury means to get them a ticket each to Florida, the film ends with them arriving in Miami and thats where you'll need the tissues, gets me every
time! This film is excellent, its very well written and filmed. Both Voight and Hoffman are superb in there respective roles. It's gritty, its realistic and it's my all time favourite film.

mancsoulsister - 09/03/01 What a great op - this is my all time favourite film but I could never have put it into words better than you. I was eating Sweet and Sour pork balls when I first saw this film. I had been allowed to stay up late because my mum was at my grans. I cried buckets and wouldn't go to sleep until my dad said a prayer for Ratso! Well done! |
