Advantages: Interesting, funny, sad

Disadvantages: One minor sequence, but don't let it put you off!

I watched this on a recommendation of a friend, not sure what to expect. The opening sequence of quick edits set me up for a slightly unconventional film, with a wonderful soundtrack. The opening credits with Joe (John Voight) leaving home are perfectly matched to the lyrics of the music. Midnight Cowboy is a film about Joe Buck going to New York to be a gigolo to rich lonely women. However, things aren't that easy. After an initial scam, Joe befriends con-man Enrico 'Ratso' Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman) and we see them trying to get by with no money and barely a roof over their head. Joe has no clients and Ratso isn't in the best health.
After intensly disliking Ratso when he's first introduced, I began to like him and and got really emotionally involved towards the end of the film! Not that much happens really, but it's interesting, gripping, funny and sad in parts. The only sequence I didn't like was a trip scene at a party, it was a bit to experimental for me. Otherwise, the other unconventional bits - dream sequences, seeing what Joe and Ratso want to happen - are interesting and funny. Although it's old and does look a bit dated, it's still relevant and is not hindered by this.
Also, look out for moments when Joe really looks like Angelina Jolie (his real life daughter)!

Summary: Brill - love the characters and story, watch it!
