Advantages: Unusual story, well acted.

Disadvantages: Hoffman may make your skin crawl.

This was the first X film that I ever saw, but when I watch it now, it's hard to remember how shocking the subject matter was considered to be, back in the late 1960's.

It tells the story of naive Joe Buck who moves to New York City with the intention of working as a prostitute for rich women. The hardship of the realities of this life comes as a big shock to Joe. he meets and befriends a disreputable character called Ratso Rizzo, played by Hoffman at his oily best.

The film focuses on the exploits of these two men in and around the seediest areas of the Big Apple, and follows them as they decide to flee to somewhere warmer....

The ending is poignant and beautifully acted, and always brings a tear to my eye.

Harry Nilsson's "Everybody's Talking" is the theme song.
