Advantages: Good soundtrack

Disadvantages: Ridiculous plot

Steve Barron is the latest director to try his hand out at a football movie with Mike Bassett England Manager starring Ricky Tomlinson.
Tomlinson plays Mike Bassett an unsuccessful football manager given the England job after the previous manager suffers a heart attack. Consequently England start badly under Bassett and the media and supporters detest him especially after he is caught dancing in a bar drunk in his pants. After luckily qualifying for the world cup in Brazil, Bassett pleads with the fans for support culminating in England being successful.
This is a stereotypical British movie. Good in some parts, bad in others. Tomlinson is his usual comedic self playing Bassett the loveable loser.
There are many good supporting acts including Bradley Walsh as Tomlinsons assistant.
There is also a good list of cameos from Atomic Kitten to Pele to give the film some realism.
There is also a good soundtrack in the movie with music from Robbie Williams to Jarvis Cocker.
Some of the humour is to over the top. The negatives are that it's also unbelevable that Tomlinson would get the job and that England would go from being so bad, to so good. The players are also stereotypically exaggerated so they don't come across as believable.
The DVD extras include a director's commentary, trailer, featurette and some deleted scenes and interviews.
Mike Bassett England Manager is just like the real national team, inconsistent.

Summary: Average football movie
