... those days being gay was a big thing it was not open or spoken about but this gay man who made history by being elected to major public office as he was a real man of the people and was open and proud of his own personal life and it had no effect on his career. He then did what any gay man would have done when they had a bit of power was to try and get gay people to have equal rights in the U.S. This film is a great film with a goodsolid story and is very entertaining to watch. Crowned Review Milk (DVD): A Tale of Sweet Milk and Sour Grapes (1003 words)
by - written on 04/02/09 (Very useful, 245 readings)
Rating:

Film Only ~~~~~~ Milk is an accurately written tale of Harvey Milk's contribution to the gay movement in California. It wasn't until his middle years that he actually became politically active in his fight for gay rights. Until that time he hadn't felt the need to publicly announce that he was gay. After a long haul he was elected as city supervisor in 1977 and became the first openly gay man to enter into the world of American politics. He spent the rest of his very short career fighting for the freedom and respectability of gay men. Gus Van Sant and Dustin Lance Black have created a biopic film as a tribute to Harvey Milk, a film to be ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review In't Milk Brilliant!? (1188 words)

I was waiting for this film to arrive from my rental list with much anticipation as a massive fan of San Francisco and the gay rights movement. I attended the Gay Pride Parade in SF in 2004 and wanted to be able to understand the history of the fight for gay rights that this wonderful city has become renowned for over the years. Personally, now I have seen this film I think that Sean Penn totally deserved the oscar for his performance in the lead role of Harvey Milk. Critically acclaimed, this film was nominated for 8 Academy Awards and won two, one for Penn and one for Best Original Screenplay for Dustin Lance Black who turned the story into the movie we see ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Milk (DVD): Got Milk? (1193 words)

About Harvey Milk Harvey Bernard Milk was born during the era of the Great Depression (one of the worst economic downturns in modern history) to William and Minerva Karns Milk. Even as a youngster, Harvey was quite popular. Who would have ever thought that a person who seriously fought for gay rights was once a class clown? Milk graduated New York State College for Teachers with a degree in Mathematics and was active in the school paper. He later served in the US Navy in the Korean War. Afterwards, he took up jobs such as being an insurance salesman, a researcher and shop owner of a small camera shop. Along the way, Milk had a string of ...  Read the complete review

I had the pleasure of seeing Milk last week and I must say that I was very much impressed with the story. I always took pride that I knew lots about the struggle for gay rights and always saw myself as a man who knew his background and his history.... after seeing this film I realised that there was so much that I just didn't know! Milk is the story of a confident gay man in the 1970's and his rise to being the first openly gay American politician. It is a truly remarkable film for so many reasons and huge credit must be given to Sean Penn and the supporting cast who portray the main characters just so brilliantly. The casting is excellent and if ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Milk (DVD): His life changed history. His courage changed lives. (681 words)

Before the Oscar season, I myself had watched quite a few of the films that were in line to win some sort of award at the Oscars. I had not even heard of the film called Milk, before Sean Penn won his Oscar, so it was quite a surprise to me that he beat out to the likes of Brad Pitt whose performance in Curious Case was just magical. I watched this film very sceptically, out of all of the films that I rented from Blockbusters, I was not too sure about this film, mainly because I didn't know too much about the storyline or how well received the film was other than the Oscar for Penn. ======== The Plot ======== When forty year ...  Read the complete review
