Advantages: Amazing story - line and an amazing performance by the cast
Disadvantages: None
"Wow". That was exactly what came out of my mouth after watching this surprisingly brilliant, movie. I had expected to watch a nice quirky film with my favourite actor (Morgan Freeman), with a nice bit of action thrown in, but Clint Eastwood (who starred in and directs this movie) delivers a thrilling film.
THE STORYLINE.
When I rented this film, I expected a kick-ass boxing move, that like most of the rest in the genre, was thin on the ground when it came to the plot, but it stands out from other boxing films (and films in general) with a marvellously well-constructed tale.
It does still deliver the blood and guts that you expect from a boxing film, but it has so much more depth than you would imagine. The premise of the film revolves around the characters of Eastwood, who plays an underappreciated trainer, who reluctantly takes on Hilary Swank's character, an underdog amateur female boxer, and tries to make her the best out there.
However, beyond that it has so much more dealing with issues that resonate across the world. I won't go into detail as I don't want to spoil the storyline for you, but there is no doubt it is shocking.
THE ACTING:
However, good a storyline is, it needs an ever better cast to make it a truly successful and thankfully they do perform at their peak, particularly, Swank and Eastwood. Freeman's performance is notable, but the Eastwood and Swank run away with the show. At times, their performances were so life-like and realistic that I honestly forgot that I was watching a film. I believed every word that came out of their mouths and their performances really did bring me from jubilant ecstasy to crushing sorrow.
CONCLUSION:
All said and done, I would have to say it's up there with my favourite films, Fight Club, The Shawshank Redemption and City of God and I would wholeheartedly recommend to all. It truly did deserve all the awards and nominations that it received.
(P.S This is my review from Ciao)
Summary: Just an amazing fim, one of the films you just hav eto watch ebfore you die!
