Advantages: Genuine horror, Mira Sorvino, Brilliant work by Rick Lazzarini

Disadvantages: Tad far-fetched

I was persuaded to watch a film at the cinema one night in mid-98, not even knowing which until I got there, and it had been a while since my last visit. For me, Mimic was a shiver-inspiring thriller. Thinking back to how I cannot help but shiver watching the delightful 'Arachnophobia', this adds a style and vigorous horror to it that distinguishes it from similar films attempting to use insects to shock.

Led from the outset by the marvellous Mira Sorvino as a top scientist Susan Tyler, she initially sets out with a creation as a pest controller to rid the underground of organisms which are causing disease, panic and confusion in the city. However, that was then.

A deadly species of cockroach is devised, with a view to it's short life-span ending it's existence. Yet nothing ever can work to plan, and mutations take place, and three years after the saviour, the trouble starts for real. The new, much improved, intensifying creatures, splendidly composed by Lazzarini and 'The Character Shop', have the ability to mimic humans, and so go unnoticed, picking off their pray, until the team of super-heroes are on their case.

Jeremy Northam, Josh Brolin and Charles S. Sutton all star superly in an intense film of horror, where sacrifises are made, and no-one is safe. The dark, creepy sub-terrain of Ontario, Canada, creates a perfect setting for a dazzling film, which, thanks to B.Jennings, boasts some pleasing visual effects. Perhaps younger viewers would find these more appealing than I did.

Why would I recommend this? Well, this film takes insect for horror to a new dimension, and adds genuine horror, an aspect sadly absent from a lot of modern so-called horror in their genre. Presented beautifully, the clever plot and superb creature technology make it well worth the time and effort watching Mimic.
