Mini is a rebellious 18-year-old who decides to live her life by embracing as many new first experiences as possible.
Disgusted with her mother's drug abuse and her insatiable sexual appetite which never seems to be directed towards her husband, Mini's stepfather, Mini decides to become a call girl... which lands her in bed with her unknowing stepfather when the agency she works for sends her to her second client.
Mini recognizes her stepfather upon entering the hotel room, but instead of running away, she decides that he will be a new first experience. Dashing into the washroom, she calls out to him asking if he can turn off the lights, which he does. After a night of heated passion and forbidden pleasure, Mini hightails it out of the room before he sees who she really is, however, she forgets her keys in the room and he goes after her. Needless to say that he is totally shocked and horrified when he realizes he had sex with his stepdaughter. However, he quickly gets over his shock and is soon a regular visitor to her bed - going so far as to agree to Mini's plan of ridding themselves of her cumbersome mother...
With more and more children coming from broken homes today, it has become common for children to possess more than one set of parents, and being a stepfather or stepmother carries its own load of responsibilities and the same taboos that pertain to natural parents in regards to their children. Therefore, although this movie is supposed to be a light-hearted attempt at humour, the subject matter remains unsavoury.
Because none of the actors are talented enough to carry their roles, none of them come across as being particularly likeable or dislikeable. What you have is a movie filled with soulless characters, penny gags, and a storyline that brings to mind the true life story of Woody Allen and his relationship with his stepdaughter, Soon-Yi Previn, whom he later married.
As stated above, the acting is somewhat pathetic, the subject matter sleazy, the storyline so predictable it's downright tedious, and even though there are a few funny scenes splattered here and there, this movie remains downright distasteful and monotonous.
My wife had bought this film a while back and we finally decided to watch it the other night - I didn't really expect much as I had never even heard of the film and this usually means I am not expecting a master piece but, probably a film that is not worth the time of day!
However I was surprised to note that the cast included some well known names including Alec Baldwin, Jeff Goldblum, Carrie Anne Moss, Luke Wilson and Nikki Reed. With this in mind I thought it might be OK after all and so we settled down to watch it.
The film centres around a young girl named Mini played by Nikki Reed. She is quite pretty and is wanting more from her life, in particular she is fed up of her mother played by Carrie Anne Moss who orders huge alcohol supplies frequently and spends most of her time drunk and drugged up.
However Mini has a good lifestyle - she lives in a nice home and drives a nice car all due to her step father who is played by Alec Baldwin.
Mini is desperate to do something different and so decides to take up with an escort agency for fun - however one of her clients turns out to be her step dad - shocked but, also relishing the prospect of it she decides to go ahead with the act but with the room in darkness and him blindfolded. When he chases after her to give her the car keys she left behind is is shocked to discover who it is! However an affair begins and soon it becomes apparent that her mother is in the way.........
I was surprised at how many well known people were in this film and yet I had not heard of it. It has enough well known people to intrigue you into watching as I always want to see a film more if I think the actors and actresses in it are somebody are people who perform well normally.
Nikki Reed who plays Mini does a good part as a beautiful but, very deceiving young woman. She knows how to wrap men around her finger and uses this to her advantage to get what she wants. I have not personally seen in her in anything else but, she was in the OC. This is probably why I don't know her face then!
Alec Baldwin playing her step father seems the same as always. He doesn't give an overly brilliant performance but is OK and suits the role of the film very well. It shows his side as Mini's stepfather and as they start their affair he then starts to fall for her and you can see he is struggling with wanting to be with her but, also embarrassed by what he is doing.
Carrie-Anne Moss is Diane, Mini's mother and I thought she played her role pretty well. Obviously she is probably most well known for her role in the 'Matrix' but here she plays a different role altogether. We see her as a drunk who is nasty and resents her daughter for having lost out to her movie career. We see her becoming more and more worked up as the film progresses and I thought she was very good in her character role.
Jeff Goldblum plays the neighbour in the film of Mini, Diane and Martin. He plays a big time TV producer and is actually sleeping with Diane on the side! He also likes to watch Mini whilst she is in the pool which Mini knows. He played a part that seemed the same as he always does - charming and a bit boring but he suited the part for what was needed.
Luke Wilson has the role of the detective Garson. He again seemed quite similar to other roles I've seen him in where he is quite laid back and doesn't seem to do much - however he was perfect in a way for this film as he came across as the threat to Mini and Martin. He Doesn't appear in the film as much as the other three but, he does play a main role essential to the film.
The film cost my wife £4 off of Ebay but, after looking, the best price I can find it at the moment is on Play.com new at £5.99 including delivery.
Overall opinion -
I wasn't expecting much as I said but was mildly surprised as thought the film was entertaining and a bit different to what I normally watch. The film has quite a good ending too which I wasn't expecting so this always makes me enjoy a film more. I thought that the actors and actresses in the film played their parts well and overall it was entertaining to watch. I wouldn't say it's the best film I've ever seen but it is far from the worse!! The Movie's tag line is 'Sex. Murder. Blackmail. There's a first time for everything' and I would say this sums it up perfectly.
The film was interestingly part produced by Kevin Spacey and was written and directed by Nick Guthe. The film is rated a 15 as it contains sex references, violence and swearing.
