Minority Report (DVD) ... Tom Cruise, Max von Sydow ... / DVD released 13 October, 2003 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: PAL / Full of morally flawed characters, and shot in grainy desaturated colours, Steven Spielberg's Minority Report is futuristic film noir with a far-fetched B-movie plot that's so feverishly presented the audience never gets a chance to ponder its many improbabilities. Based on a short story by Philip K Dick, the film is set in the Orwellian near-future of 2054, where a trio of genetically modified "pre-cogs" warn of murders before they happen. In an SF twist on the classic Hitchcockian wrong-man scenario, Detective John Anderton (Tom Cruise) is the zealous precrime cop who is himself revealed as a future killer. Plot twists and red herrings drive the action forward, and complications abound, not least Anderton's crippling emotional state, his drug habit, his avuncular-yet-sinister boss (Max Von Sydow) and the ambitious FBI agent Witwer (Colin Farrell) snapping at his heels. Though the film toys with the notion of free will in a deterministic universe, this is not so much a movie of grand ideas as forward-looking ones. Its depiction of a near-future filled with personalised advertising and intrusive security devices that relentlessly violate the right of anonymity is disturbingly believable. Ultimately, though, it's a chase movie and the innovative set-piece sequences reveal Spielberg's flair for staging action. As with A.I. before it, there's a nagging feeling that the all-too-neat resolution is a Spielbergian touch too far: the movie could satisfactorily have ended several minutes earlier. Although this is superior SF from one of Hollywood's greatest craftsmen, it would have been more in the spirit of Philip K Dick to leave a few tantalisingly untidy plot threads dangling. --Mark Walker

... crime. Why would he want to kill somebody? To this end he kidnaps one of the precognition psychics to reveal more of the who and where of this crime. I won't say much more than this so the ending isn't given away. The movie is great to watch and contains some real suspense filled scenes. I like science fiction and have a lot of time for this flick. The look and style of this work is very individual and references the past at times in order to set the future scenario, similar to Bladerunner in that respect. It is a fair...more

Premium Review Minority Report (DVD): You've already read this review - the pre-cogs told me. (875 words)

Rating:

I purhcased 'Minority Report' the other week for a number of reasons - 1 - It is sci-fi. 2 - I hadn't seen it 3 - It was based on a short story by Philip K. Dick 4 - Spielberg directed it 5 - It was cheap (I am and will always be a tight-fisted Yorkshireman) For those of you unaware of the fact Philip Kindred Dick is a phenomenal author of numerous science fiction stories, some of which you will already know - the Ridley Scott film 'Blade Runner' was based on his novel 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?' and 'Total Recall' was based on his short story 'We can Remember it for You Wholesale'. Anybody out there with ...  Read the complete review

This film which is set in the future stars Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell. Cruise plays John Anderton who is a member of what is known as the Pre Crime unit. Due to modern technology the pre crime unit are able to see crimes happen before they actually take place due to the dreams of three mutants who are suspended in water, as an agent for the Pre Crime Unit Anderton job is to take the fragmented images from the dreams and using the images actually identify where and when the crime will take place as often the dreams are only a few minutes or hours before the event takes place. Once done using high tech transport the agents go and arrest the person and charge them based ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Minority Report (DVD): grime and punishment (942 words)

Rating:

The backdrop for Minority Report is a high tech world of talking advertisements, automated cars and retinal scans fifty years in the future, recognisable in some respects and totally alien in others. Much has changed between the present day and this otherworldly future, not least of all the police department. An ongoing experiment is underway pushing the boundaries of crime solving, a way of determining criminal events before they happen and intercepting the would be perpetrator. Pre-crime is a new department within law enforcement that use three psychics, or "pre-cogs" who can pick up on the emotions created by future murders and relate the information to ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review The running and puking and jet packs! Whee! (1109 words)

Our appetite for this behemoth movie was whetted by the little-seen and mildly under-rated Impostor, which slipped out on a stealth release for a week or two in June 2002. I liked that film, for all its flaws. It was also a Philip K Dick adaptation about a respected man forced to go on the run to clear his name. But I loved Minority Report, despite the presence of so many people it's hip to dislike (Spielberg, Cruise, John Williams). Almost every consistent feature of Philip K. Dick's ground-breaking fiction is reproduced, but often in fairly under-stated ways. This has been a true labour of love. And it's made all the better by the fact that all ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Minority Report (DVD): The One (1783 words)

Rating:

This film was going to be big. It had the usual big concept of a future world bent on Big Brother style security but, more importantly, it had two of the biggest gunners of Hollywood side-by-side. Spielberg and Cruise. The film was bound to generate enough interest on this premise alone, nevermind about the story, after all with this incredible movie duo how could the movie fail? Reviews were all fairly positive, apart from the infamous Harry Knowles of Ain?t It Cool slamming it, probably because he didn?t receive a big payout. The opening weekend gross of $35m, however, wasn?t as big as expected with these two ...  Read the complete review
