Advantages: Richard Attenborough's performance as the festive favourite; the joy and warmth of the film.

Disadvantages: May be too emotional and sentimental for some.

A remake of the 1947 classic of the same name, Miracle on 34th street tells the story of young Susan Walker (Mara Wilson) and her encounter with the magical Kris Kringle (Richard Attenborough - possibly the best Santa Claus ever).

The film follows the two through one special Christmas, as pessimistic, old soul Susan [who does not believe in Santa; as she was told the 'secret' by her mother] meets the special Kris, a 'department store' Santa who believes he's the real thing. What ensues is a heartwarming story of love, magic, and most importantly, belief.

Mircale on 34th Street is an excellent film that embodies all the wonder, love and togetherness of Christmas. While it can be criticised for being overly sentimental and emotional, is this not what the season is about? Yes, there is a lot of sentiment, and yes there is much emotion, but these combine to make an excellent and enjoyable film that will undoubtedly bring together families at the holidays - just like a good Christmas film should. The final scene in particular will give anyone a wonderfully warm feeling inside.

The performances from Wilson and Attenborough are undoubtedly the best in the film, and the bond they forge is touching. Attenborough is especially good as 'Santa'; his enigmatic nature and joyous persona are clearly visible throughout the film, and his performance is both funny and moving - the scene with the little deaf girl especially so (it gets me every time). Elizabeth Perkins and Dylan McDermott are excellent in their roles as Sarah's mother, and propsective father; they add the romance portion of the film, and their story, unlike many in the genre, seems earnest and genuine, adding much of the films family appeal.

It must be said, this is not just a simple, happy, feel good film; there is a lot of drama thrown in that keeps the film from descending into another 'head-in-the-clouds', fantasy film bent on shoving happiness and joy down your throat - the scenes in particular when Kris is involved in some trouble are particularly dramatic. The story seems more real than most Christmas films, like it could happen to anyone; ok, so it's about Santa Claus, but there is still a strong feel that these events could actually take place.

Ultimately, this film is a wonderful and heartwarming one that will make any Christmas seem happier, and will spread holiday cheer throughout the family.

DVD wise, the features are none existant - interactive menus and scene selection aside - but this is a DVD that is well worth buying for the film alone. Everyone, especially those with young children, should buy this for a wonderful and magical Christmas treat.

Summary: A wonderful Christmas treat for viewers of all ages.
