Advantages: A golden oldie
Disadvantages: none
Being a child of black and white TV I can still remember the thrill I felt the first time I watched this film. I was only about 5 or 6 years old when I first saw it and could not believe that people doubted the existence of Father Christmas. This is a lovely film where the identity of good old Santa is put into question when an elderly gent, claiming to be Chris Cringles himself, is put to work in a department store and a rival store sets about discrediting him. Attempts are made to commit the gent to an asylum and other underhanded things happen but the case of identity is taken to court. There would be horror if the judiciary declared there being no such person as Santa so the judge was placed in turmoil when the solution is found in the Federal post office. So much mail, addressed to Santa, had been delivered to the court house, the judge had to recognise the existence of the man in red and, as the mail had been delivered to Chris at the Court, he had to be the real Santa Claus. There are many sub-plots to this film which involves a lone parent and her young daughter who was raised not to believe in the unreal and a lawyer who falls in love with the mother. As ever, Santa makes the young girl's wishes come true....awwww... Lovely.
