It is a shame that kids today will only know Richard Attenborough through his appearances in movies like JURASSIC PARK and this one, MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET. When he appears on screen these days it is usually only as a bit of a doddery old duffer, whereas he was an accomplished actor in some classic movies of yesteryear and is also one of this country’s best directors.

Having said that, I did enjoy this movie. Attenborough play a department store Santa Claus in New York who goes on trial in order to prove that he really is the man in question. It’s a feel-good movie (actually a remake of an Oscar-winning film from 1947), and it certainly does make you feel good at the end. It’s a trifle twee in places (as you would expect in this kind of a movie), and the best scenes are when Elizabeth Perkins, as the mother of a young girl who doesn’t believe that Santa is Santa, is being wooed by her neighbour (played by Dylan McDermott), and not necessarily the scenes in which Attenborough appears.

This is definitely one to watch with the kids, but don’t see it at any time other than Christmas!
