Advantages: Brilliant suspense
Disadvantages: None
Misery is the movie adaptation of Kings book of the same name. Its a great movie, which is mostly loyal to the book, and is the better for it. For those of you who arent familiar with the story......Paul Sheldon (played by James Woods) is the famous author of the cheesy romance novels about Misery Chastain and her adventures. One afternoon in a bad storm he crashes his car in the middle of nowhere. He is 'rescued' by Annie Wilkes (played by Kathy Bates) who happens to be his number one fan and a complete and utter psychopath. Paul is very badly injured and is 'nursed' back to health by Annie. When he is well enough, Annie explains how much she loves the Misery books and how upset she was when Paul killed off Misery. In return for all her care and attention Annie asks Paul to write a new book bringing Misery back from the dead and if he doesnt she will kill him. Slowly Paul begins to uncover the truth about Annie Wilkes and her past and soon realises he is writing to stay alive. Wheelchair bound and addicted to painkillers Paul faces the desperate task of somehow escaping..... Misery is terrifying and gripping til the last. The acting is marvellous and even if you've read the book you will still be on the edge of your seat. Bates is stunning as the insane Annie Wilkes, I dont think i'll ever see her as another character again. Misery is definitely a nail biter, the tension builds flawlessly throughout and climaxs brilliantly at the end. Some moments are truely horrific and you will be watching through splayed fingers. Misery is a classic horror movie with all the action and suspense necessary to keep you pinned to the TV. I would highly recommend this to any King fans and even if you're not a King fan, this is well worth watching even if only for Bates performance.
