Advantages: great entertainment

Disadvantages: none

Watching this movie will make you cringe in a few places but it will also make you laugh as well,I would personally class it more as a physcological thriller rather than a horror movie because there isn't really any blood and guts kind of stuff.I suppose it is in the horror category as it's based on a Stephen King book. Anyway read on and I will tell you more.

Paul Sheldon crashes his car on a snowy mountain road and is rescued by a strapping lass going by the name of Annie Wilkes. So what? I hear you asking, keep reading.

He wakes up to find Annie has taken him home to her farm to nurse him, as the weather was so bad it was impossible to get to a hospital. She is also a nurse and has a good idea of what she is doing, a good thing seeing how she has pinned his badly mangled legs back together.

Paul is a best-selling author of a series of romance novels with the main character named Misery Chastain. Annie proclaims herself to be his No.1 fan and proudly shows off her collection of books, she has also read every magazine interview he has featured in and feels she knows him inside out.

Initially Paul is both flattered by the adoration and is grateful to have been rescued and looked after so well.

Annie lavishes attention on him feeding and washing him chatting away happily all the time and she even introduces him to her favourite pig named Misery of course.

Paul enquires about the state of the phones and roads on a regular basis and one time sees a different, darker side to Annie as she is enraged and can't believe he would ever want to leave. At this point he decides he must find a way to escape or at least raise the alarm, someone must be looking for him.

So in a nutshell that is it really, Paul is trying to escape and to stay alive at least and Annie desperately wants to keep him there hoping he will fall in love with her. There is a lot more to the story but I don't want to spoil it for you,i
ts better that you see it for yourself, just look out for it when its on TV next.

Kathy Bates plays Annie Wilkes and she virtually dominates the screen with her split second mood swings and very odd behaviour.

James Caan is also very good in this movie, although I thought at first he was a little bit wooden. But given his characters' circumstances I think he played it perfectly. I think anybody would be a little shell-shocked if they had been in an accident that they have no memory of,only to find themselves in the clutches of a possible mad woman!

It's full of suspense and twists but there are some laughs along the way,but you may want to look away when Annie mentions the word'hobbling'.

Look out for the lovely Lauren Bacall who has a small role as Paul's worried publicist and also Robert Farnsworth who pays the sheriff,Buster.

A very good film that you can enjoy many times over, but not one for the kiddies. This film runs for roughly one hour and forty-five minutes and not a second of it is wasted.

Thanks for reading once again,

Hamish.
