I’m not really a huge fan of Hollywood’s sugary sweet films, finding them too light and without substance, but occasionally I do like to watch something silly and light. I really enjoyed Miss Congeniality – I’m a big fan of Sandra Bullock and Michael Caine anyway – so when I saw this, I thought I’d give it a go, particularly as I’d borrowed two quite heavy foreign language films at the same time. I didn’t have particularly high expectations – it is rare that the second film is as good as the first – and perhaps because of this, I found this film enjoyably passed a couple of hours. Miss Congeniality was a fun lightweight comedy that managed to mix humour and a detective story very well while also managing to squeeze in the age old story of a duck out of water. In this case the tomboyish FBI agent Gracie, played by Sandra Bullock, becoming part of a beauty contest as an undercover assignment and discovering her feminine side. The ending of the first film left the story with nowhere to go really. Having changed Gracie from tomboy to woman what could a sequel add to the story? Being a huge fan of the first film this was a must see and as I have seen the first film about 20 I was not disappointed. F.B.I. operative Gracie Hart played by Sandra Bullock is back after the first installment where she went undercover in a beauty pageant, unfortunately she is now so famous and recognizable she is unable to go back to the force and ends up as the face of the Bureau after an undercover job is blown.
