An average film that lacks a decent plot (Miss Congeniality (DVD))

Advantages: A few funny moments.

Disadvantages: Poor plot

Miss Congeniality is a light hearted comedy mixing humour and thriller together to hopefully capture more than one audience.


The Plot

A serial bomber is terrorizing the US and the FBI have suddenly found a possible lead. Believing the next target to be a World beauty pageant the FBI have decided that they need an insider in order to protect the contestant.

Enter Sandra Bullock as an unruly, course, feminist FBI agent who could not care about her appearance. Her gung-ho attitude has already got her suspended from major cases, but as a last resort she is asked to step in as a ‘beauty queen’,

Michael Caine plays an effeminate trainer who although he no longer is used in these pageants, is the last hope to transform Sandra Bullock into a beauty queen.

In a similar vein to ‘My Fair Lady’ we see the struggle between the two characters as Sandra is belligerent and refuses to adopt the role set out for her.

We follow Sandra’s transformation through the progress of the Pageant as the plot becomes a little suspenseful;

Without giving too much away, the plot is very predictable and ambles to an expected conclusion.

The Acting

Sandra Bullock is her typical self as she performs as an angry and yet funny FBI agent. It is a shame that she is still doing roles like this that do not test her acting abilities to their fullest.

Michael Cane is funny as the trainer, and is more convincing than Sandra. He plays the ‘gay’ trainer very well without overdoing the role.

William Shatner’s role as the host of the show is a little over the top as he seemingly plays a spaced out host. Perhaps he is trying to break the mold of ‘Captain Kirk’ but this is more in line with his commercials for Priceline.com rather than his performances on Star Trek.

This movie
is a little weak with a poor plot and a cast that seems to be searching for this plot. There are a few funny moments, but generally I thought the movie to be average. It seems to be an attempt to update the ‘My Fair Lady’ story by adding an interesting FBI plot, unfortunately this doesn’t work.
