Miss Potter (DVD) ... charming and cloying with pleasing sure-footedness. Apple-cheeked Renee Zellweger (Bridget Jones' Diary) once again slips into a British accent to play writer/illustrator Beatrix Potter, the creator of Peter Rabbit. Potter, born into wealth, fought the disapproval of her high society mother to do something as crass as publish a book... and to fall in love with her publisher, Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor, previously teamed with Zellweger in Down With Love). Unfortunately, their love runs into something worse than upper-class stuffiness. Miss Potter skips through Potter's life a bit too briskly at times, but Zellweger's thankfully restrained performance, McGregor's infinite charm, and some beautiful shots of the English landscape keep the movie grounded and engaging. Also featuring a crackling supporting performance by Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves) as Warne's sister Millie. --Bret Fetzer

'Miss Potter' was never a film I really wanted to see at the cinema so didn't bother. However, having been given the DVD as a Christmas present, I was very happy to slouch on the sofa with a glass of wine and the last few Christmas chocolates and watch it - and I was very glad I did as 'Miss Potter' is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining film! The film is based on the true life of Beatrix Potter, the highly successful children's author and illustrator who was responsible for such classics as 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' and 'The Tale of Jemima Puddleduck'! I found the film to be a very absorbing insight into the life of this lady, who certainly did not ...

I recieved Miss Potter from the dvd rental company I suscribe to this morning and have just finished watching it. It is about the life of Beatrix Potter, the most successfull childrens author (or something like that) ever, as they told us at the end of the film. It starts when she is 32 in 1902 with flashbacks to her childhood. The opening scences show her trying to get her stories and drawings published. I am sure you have all seen her drawings, Peter Rabbit, Jemina Puddleduck etc they are really quite cute little drawings. Her first book gets published and we see her and her publisher becoming rather fond of each other. The story continues along ...

Plot: Miss Beatrix Potter (Renée Zellweger) comes from a very wealthy, but small family. Her mother is somewhat controlling of both Beatrix and her father, but he does not compain. Beatrix is a quiet character who enjoys drawing little images which she can see come to life. Her father supports this wish, but her mother does not feel that it is appropriate for a girl of Beatrix's age to be unmarried and an artist. The film opens and ends on the same scene, with Beatrix discussing how stories can manage to lead you anywhere, at the end we find that her story led her to the opening scene. The film is perhaps a little obvious in it's storyline, ...
