Advantages: Action packed

Disadvantages: silly plot

This has some truely breath taking stunts, from the opening scene, which has Tom Cruise hanging one-handed off a rock face to the motor cycle joust finale.
The stars are beautiful, the action is pretty constant and there is some spectacular scenery. In fact, as long as you don't let the plot get in the way of the action you can just sit back and enjoy.
The plot (what there is of it) focuses on a gang of villains who have stolen a deadly virus. Ethan Hunt has to get it back - with the help of their leader's ex-girlfriend, who also happens to be an international jewel theif. Needless to say, she falls in love with Hunt, and doesn't want to go, but in the end her sense of duty wins through and she risks her life to find the virus for the good guys. Then the ususal complications ensue...her evil ex finds out what she's up to...and the race is on to get the last remaining samples of the virus.
It sounds simple enough, but you have to ask...why they are creating this horrible new virus in first place (I mean, it's not like there's a shortage of viruses in the world), and why do people feel the need to do a karate-kicking backflip to knock out their opponents rather than just shooting them.
Some of the imagery in the final scenes is pretty naff too -particularly the bit where the flames are reflected in the baddy's eyes while Tom Cruise enters the room with a white dove soaring overhead - just in case you've forgotten who the good guy was.
The most annoying thing though, is the use of masks to get the characters out of difficult situations. Everyone seems to have a clolection of masks which make them look like other people. These are then taken off and the real person is revealed...
All in all, this is a fun film, and as long as you don't think to hard, you'll probably enjoy it.

doves and flames in eyes shows it's definitly a John Woo film. Do you think he could make a film without white doves appearing in it?
