Advantages: Everything - animation, voices, and Sulley!
Disadvantages: None whatsoever
Since the very first bedtime, all around the world, children have known that once their mothers and fathers tuck them in, and shut off the light, that there are monsters hiding in their closets, waiting to emerge! What they don't know is: it's nothing personal. It's just their job.
Monsters, Inc. is a large power factory in a city full of monsters. Monsters of all shapes and sizes work in the factory everyday, collecting the city's power by creeping into children's bedrooms in the human world and making them scream. But when Boo, a scared little girl, accidentally ends up in the monster world, the top Kid-scarer, Sulley, and his Scare Assistant, Mike Wazowski, find themselves having to look after her. But in a world where monsters are actually terrified of children, getting her back to her bedroom is a lot harder than they thought, especially when the nasty Randall is out to steal Sulley's top spot. But Boo ends up becoming a great friend and Sulley and Mike realise that laughter is much more powerful than a scream.
~ Cast ~
Sulley - John Goodman
Mike Wazowski - Billy Crystal
Boo - Mary Gibbs
Randall - Steve Buscemi
The animation, as expected from a Disney Pixar film, is amazing. Each character is very bright and colourful and wonderfully designed and every single monster comes in all different shapes and sizes. Sulley is a big furry turquoise bear-like monster with purple spots and horns; Mike is a big green eyeball with skinny hands and legs; and Randall is a lizard who is able to camouflage himself by changing the colour of his skin. Another great thing about the animation is that the good guys all look either cuddly or silly which immediately makes you warm to them, whereas the bad guys, Randall included, all depict nasty shapes, i.e. a lizard.
The voices cast for the characters are brilliant and each and every one manages to bring their character to life. John Goodman has that big deep fatherly voice and you can just imagine him being the big and furry Sulley who takes Boo under his wing. Billy Crystal's voice fits Mike Wazowski perfectly with his high-pitched and quick speaking voice and he is the funny one of the two. Steve Buscemi is great as the nasty and slimy Randall with his slightly strange and very unique voice. Tiny little Boo, with her dark pigtails and squeaky voice, is the cutest little girl on earth and I'm sure everyone will agree will this. It's impossible not to fall in love with her and every time she smiles, I end up smiling, and every time she gets scared or upset, I feel for her.
There is some great music in the film and the song 'If I Didn't Have You' even won an Academy award for Best Original Song.
Children will love this film with the bright animation and funny characters and there are also the classic hilarious moments and lines for the adults to enjoy too.
Monsters, Inc. is one of my all time favourite animated movies, not just because of the great storyline and funny anecdotes but also because of the wonderful characters. Sulley is one of my favourite Disney characters - when I went to Disneyland last year and I saw the character Sulley walking around about to begin having his photo taken with people, I got soooo excited. My mum said my face lit up like a little girl and she hadn't seen me ever run so fast to get to him!
I was actually about to say that I've always wished they'd bring out a Monsters, Inc. 2 when I stumbled across the fact, on IMDb, that it is actually currently in development! Whohoo, I can't wait!
