Advantages: good for all the family
Disadvantages: It's been done before (toy story fame)
I didn't know this film was by the makers of Toy Story, before I went to see it - but I guessed it was, within the first thirty seconds of the film! In fact it even has the same character in the opening scene! Either a quirky idea or a cartoon artist with a finite capacity for drawing people? Needless to say though, if you liked Toy Story, you'll like this. It won't have those nasty pre-expectations of a sequal but it basically appeals to the same sense of humour and visual fun. If you've not watched a TV or socialised in the last month - here's the basic plot to the film: It dispells the fears that all children have about monsters under their beds and in their cupboard by showing it from the monsters viewpoint (Great idea). It turns out Monsters are afraid of kids but have to scare them as part of their jobs. I won't give the rest away, I promise! It's loads of fun with some great looking characters, bad guys, a love interest, fight scenes and a high speed chase (ish) So, all the ingredients are there. We went as two adults and two kids and all enjoyed it just as much. I really hope that the short mini film at the start was part of the deal at all cinemas as this mini film by the same company was a peach. (if you go - I'm referring to the bird sketch!) I'm a clock watcher but this managed to keep my attention pretty much all the way through - and I didn't even stop to wonder if I needed the loo, or if my lips needed lipsalve, or was that nail in need of a file after all etc etc - like I normally do. So, it scored highly. Gosh, it's really hard writing a film review with no actors (as such) to talk about and without giving the plot away! Wish I'd thought about that before...... Anyway - one thing I will say is STAY TO THE END!! Loads of people left when the credits came up - unaware that there is another 5 minutes of the film 'out-tak
es' after the first few credits. There were families on their way out who all had to come back in and stand in the doorways to catch the last bit! And others who never realised they'd walked out too soon - and are probably reading this now and thinking 'oh, bugger'. Stay seated until it all goes black - or you'll miss a treat. There. You've been told. Now get ye to a cinema!
