Advantages: Hilarious, typical British comedy
Disadvantages: Erm, might offend someone who's religious, probably not be amusing to someone with a "normal" sense of humour
I must have only been about 8 or 9 years old when I first saw this film...
and I loved it from the start. Of course, at that age I was far too young to understand a lot of the humour; but, the complete insanity of the Python team did not escape me, even in my vulnerable, naive years.
Actually I have Michael Palin, John Cleese and the rest of the gang to thank for my present state of lunacy. I am very proud of my somewhat unusual sense of humour and it's stood me in good stead in recent months. I'm fortunate to be on the same wavelength as some of my more eccentric friends, who are also huge fans of Monty Python. However, my boyfriend is sometimes a bit alarmed...
The film is essentially about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table on a quest to find the Holy Grail. I believe it caused quite a lot of controversy when it first came out (though I'm a bit too young to remember that) due the religious theme... oh and could possibly have something to do with a vision of God appearing as a cartoon in the sky.
There are far too many classic moments to mention and I'm sure anyone reading this will probably know all about the film anyway. So I'm going to tell you about my personal favourite moments:
1) The subtitles at the beginning of the film.
They often go unnoticed but random comments are sneakily added amongst the list of people involved with direction, production, etc. There seems to be a weird obsession with moose! Hmmmmmm
Personally, I think ferrets would have been a better choice, but moose is random enough for me!
2) The fight between King Arthur and the black knight who won't let them cross the bridge.
King Arthur proceeds to chop off the guy's arms, then legs and ends with a torso on the ground still trying to fight!!
Probably doesn't sound in the least bit amusing, the way I'm describing it; but, honestly, it's hilarious.
3) The conversation K
ing Arthur has with one of the soldiers on the tower about swallows carrying coconuts.
4) The fact that they are riding around the country pretending to be on horseback is also funny in itself.
5) The part near the end with the killer rabbit. Looks cute but has extreme violent tendencies.
Anyway, there's loads more but I don't want to spoil it TOO much for anyone who hasn't seen it!
I think I'm going to have to watch it now because it's been far too long since my last viewing. My next task will be to persuade my boyfriend to watch it and get him round to my way of thinking. I'm sure six months of being locked in a room and made to watch endless Monty Python sketches will sort him out.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
