Advantages: loads of great actors, good songs

Disadvantages: very surreal, wont appeal to everyone

Moulin rouge is one of them films that you either love or you hate. It's like marmite. I myself absolutely love this film. I must have watched it 100 times and it never gets boring. Written By Baz Luhrman with an amazing cast this film truly is a must for any musical fan.

CAST
^^^^^^^

Ewan McGregor
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Born the 3st March 1971 in Crieff, Scotland, Ewan has appeared in many much loved films such as Trainspotter and the Star wars episodes. Ewan Plays Christian an English man who is trying to become a writer. He leaves England in search of inspiration and feels that the best place to find this is Paris, where there are true bohemians. Paris is the ultimate place were he could learn about Truth, Beauty, freedom and love.
Nicole Kidman
Tom Cruises' ex was born the 20th July 1967 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Nicole holds dual US and Australian citizenship, as she was born in the U.S.A but moved to Australia as a child. Nicole plays Satine, the Sparkling Diamond, the courtesan of the Moulin Rouge club. Satine knows what she wants out of life, and she knows never to fall in love. That is, until she meets Christian.
John Leguizamo
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Born on the 22nd July 1964 in Bogotá, Colombia. John starred in Romeo and Juliet as Tybalt and in Die Hard 2 before appearing as Toulouse-Lautrec in Moulin Rouge. Toulouse is a dwarf and John plays this brilliantly with some great special effects. Toulouse is one of the bohemians who befriend Christian in an effort to get him to write the play for the Moulin Rouge. He becomes a loyal friend to Christian as they make up the play.

Jim Broadbent
~~~~~~~~~~~
Born on the 24th May 1949 in Lincolnshire, England. Jim has appeared In the Avengers and in The Bridget Jones films as Bridget's dad. Jim Plays the larger than life Harold Zidler, the owner of the Moulin rouge. Harold is a big jolly man who sets up Satine with the duke in order for him to financiate the club to turn it into a theatre.
Richard Roxburgh
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Born on the 1st January 1962 in Albury, New south Wales, Australia. Richard has played many a role including Hugh Stamp in Mission Impossible 2 and Dracula in Van Helsing. Richard plays The Duke in Moulin Rouge, the duke is the financier of the Moulin rouge business decision to turn it into a theatre. In return for the finance The Duke is promised Satines Hand, but as it appears obvious to him that Satines heart lies with Christian the duke has to fight for Satines Affections.

Kylie Minogue

Born on the 28th May 1968 in Melbourne, Australia. Kylie started her career in neighbours, playing mechanic Charlene. After leaving Neighbours she went onto become Australia's most successful Woman singer, with numerous number ones. Kylie also starred in the Delinquents and in Street fighter. Kylie's role in Moulin Rouge is only a small part as she plays the Green Fairy. The green fairy is a hallucination that is brought on by the drink Absinthe that is enjoyed at the bohemian's party after their play has been accepted.

THE DIRECTOR
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Baz Luhrmann real name Mark Anthony Luhrmann was born on the 17th September 1962 in new south Wales, Australia. Baz directed many films Including Romeo and Juliet and Strictly Ballroom. Baz directed the most expensive commercial ever made for Channel No5 it was a 4-minute short "film" starring Nicole Kidman.

THE PLOT
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Well if you hadn't already guessed the plot here goes. The film is set in 1900 Paris in a town called Montmartre. Christian arrives from England to write about things that he has never experienced in England, Truth, Beauty, Freedom and that which he has never experienced, Love. Christian unwittingly gets roped into writing a play for the bohemians and they got to the Moulin Rouge and meet satine who mistakes him for the duke. One thing leads to another and Satine falls for Christian. The duke has to fight for her love…Who will win? Will love overcome Money and power?

THE SONGS
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Nicole and Ewan prove that they can actually sing in the film as they perform a number of songs all sung by themselves, which some wonderful renditions of some great oldies. Songs include :

1) Nature Boy performed by David Bowie
2) Lady Marmalade performed by Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink
3) Because we can performed by Fatboy Slim
4) Sparkling Diamonds performed by Nicole Kidman, Jim Broadbent, Caroline O'Connor, Natalie Mendoza and Lara Mulcahy
5) Rhythm Of The Night performed by Valeria
6) Your Song performed by Ewan McGregor and Alessandro Safina
7) Children of the Revolution performed by Bono, Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer
8) One Day I'll Fly Away performed by Nicole Kidman
9) Diamond Dogs performed by Beck
10) Elephant Love Medley performed by Nicole Kidman, Ewan McGregor and Jamie Allen
11) Come What May performed by Nicole Kidman And Ewan McGregor
12) El Tango De Roxanne performed by Ewan McGregor, Jose Feliciano and Jacek Koman
13) Complainte De La Butte performed by Rufus Wainwright
14) Hindi Sad Diamonds performed by Nicole Kidman & Cast
15) Nature Boy performed by David Bowie & Massive Attack

BONUS FEATURES
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

There are two disks in the box set. Disk one features the actual film then some of the special features which include a feature where you can watch the whole film over again but with commentary from Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin and Don McAlpine, this can be quite annoying and I only managed to get through about 10 minutes of it, especially as it's a long film and with someone talking over it all the time is not my idea of fun. Disk Two includes a behind the scenes look at how they made the film. It tells all about the real Moulin Rouge with Commentaries from Nicole Kidman, Ewan Mcgregor, John Leguizamo, and Craig Pearce the co-writer. It also includes a feature called the Stars, which starts with a small screen old-fashioned style video clip of Ewan and Nicole behind the scenes and then an interview with both Ewan Mcgregor and Nicole Kidman. There is also an interview with Baz Luhrmann and Craig Pearce. There is also some unseen footage. You also get to see the dance choreography, there's a section with footage of the songs and an interview with fatboy Slim. And there is a section about the set design and the costumes. The bonus features on this disk are brilliant and I really enjoyed watching them especially the dance and design parts.

Approximate Feature running time - 122 minutes

CONCLUSION
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This film is brilliant, it will not appeal to everyone I have met people who absolutely hate the film but also people who love it. I never wanted to watch this, as I didn't think I would like it so I put it off for a long time. Then when I did watch it I never really liked it that much, but obviously enough to watch it again and im glad that I did because it grew on me and know I love it. It is more of a girlie love film and if you like musicals then this is more of a modern day musical. Even though it is supposed to be set in the 1900 the music is up o date and even features Nirvana's Teenage spirit. This can be quite confusing at first but the whole film is surreal so it fits in perfect. I would recommend for you to watch this film, if you hate it then don't bother with it again but if there is a tinkling that you might start to like it then watch again, it might surprise you how much the film can grow on you.

Thanks for reading
