~ Plot ~
The film is the story told by Christian, and you often see him sat at his typewriter typing out the story.
The Moulin Rouge is a “sensuous nightclub” run by Harold Zidler (Jim Broadbent) where Satine (Nicole Kidman) is the star. Christian (Ewan McGreggor) comes to Paris during the bohemian revolution and stumbles upon a group of people writing a play, and he ends up being the main write of the play and writing the songs for it. Breifly, there is a mix up at the Moulin Rouge and instead of Satine having a private “session” with The Duke (Richard Roxburgh) who Harold is trying to get to invest in the Moulin Rouge, she finds herself with Christian.
Christian falls in love with Satine and in turn she falls in love with him. However, The Duke wants Satine for himself, in return he will invest in the Moulin Rouge and the play “Spectacular Spectacular” Christian writes which is to be performed at the Moulin Rouge. The play is about a penny-less sitar player who falls in love with a courtesan, but the evil Maharaja wants the courtesan for himself… sound familiar!? Who will get Satine? Will true love prevail or will The Duke get his way?
I won’t give away the whole plot, but basically it’s a tale about love with a cruel twist of fate.
The film ends with Christian finishing the story with the line "The greatest thing you will ever learn, is just to love and be loved in return."
The film is fantastic and revolves completely around music. There are so many modern songs crammed into this one film. One of my favourite parts is where Satine and Christian sing a mix of lots of different songs in one, such as “All you need is love”, “I will always love you” etc. Both Nicole and Ewan have fantastic singing voices which harmonise perfectly. The songs are performed by the cast, but there are songs from Nirvana, Elton John, and T.Rex, to name a few, in the film. The following is a partial list of songs featured in the film along with the artist that popularized them.
Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGreggor are very convinicinv in this film. I can't think of two people who would have played these parts better. There is such chemistry on screen. I'm a fan of both these actors anyway - so I may be slightly biased!
The dancing in this film is fantastic. Every time I watch it, it makes me want to be a dancer! Another of my favourite parts is where they dance and sing to “Roxanne”; the main dancer in this scene (Caroline O’Connor) is great. Wish I could dance like that!
I’d say this is a typical romantic, slushy film, with an amazing soundtrack. It might be a bit girly, but my boyfriend loves it too, so it can’t be that bad!
The costumes are brilliant as well, especially the fantastically coloured ra-ra skirts. The film won an Academy Award for the costumes. As well as awards for art direction, best original score, best motion picture, and best actress - to name a few!
