Advantages: Fabulously produced production with music and filming that is totally captivating.
Disadvantages: None really.
This extravaganza of music and colour was first released in 2001 and then again by 20th Century Fox in 2006. This special edition is a two disc set with deleted scenes, interviews, music video clips and a stills gallery.
The Moulin Rouge is a club in Paris in 1889. Satine (Nicole Kidman) works at the club and falls in love with Christian, an English poet (Ewan MacGregor). Satine wants to be an actress but her life as a courtesan in the dark underworld of The Moulin Rouge makes it impossible for her to realise her ambition. Christian is a dreamer, a poet, a romantic, lover. He is searching for truth.
By chance, Christian meets Toulouse Lautrec through a group of Parisian Bohemians and he encourages Christian to write and get his work performed at the Moulin Rouge. The story is told by Christian and his typewriter can be heard clicking away in the background.
Nicole Kidman play a sexy, seductive Satine as she stars at The Moulin Rouge and Christian is drawn into her spell. Their affair causes trouble and the film builds up to this almost like a crescendo of music and colour. The visuals are absolutely stunning.
During filming for this production, Nicole Kidman fractured a rib during a dance routine and things had to be put on hold for a couple of weeks.
Moulin Rouge was directed by Baz Luhrman and the influences of the operas he has previously directed can be seen in the production. There are traces of 'La Boheme' and 'Midsummer Night's Dream.
The whole thing is captivating, very romantic ans sensual and a treat for the senses. I could watch it over and over just for the colours and music. This is truly a modern classic and is right up there with such well respected productions as 'La Boheme' which was also set in the Paris of the 1900's. Baz Luhrman surpasses himself with this one.
Summary: A reqal treat to watch. Something ou could watch over again and again, so worth buying.
