You either love it or you hate it. It's like some varieties of food that have an acquired taste, you either take to it or you don't. When I first heard of Moulin Rouge, I didn't think it was going to be my cup of tea, however I was made redundant and was off work for a couple of weeks and a friend of mine lent me a couple of DVD's to watch before I started my new job.

I had sat on it for a week or so, watched everything else and only had this left, so I thought I would give it a go and to my surprise I actually found it quite likeable and entertaining, and it has become one of my favourite films of all time, which I can watch over and over again.

Moulin Rouge takes us back to 1900, the crux of the Bohemian movement and focuses on a young writer CHristian (Ewan McGregor) who tells his own story of love. Christian is new to MontMatre, Paris and wants to fulfil his dream. When he enters into the MOulin Rouge, he befriends some of the weird and wonderful people of that era, and finds himself being attracted to the main attraction, Satine, a courtesan, who has also got more male attraction from the Duke.

As Christian prepares to visit Satine, who is awaiting a visit from the Duke, wires get crossed and she thinks that Christian is the Duke and is pleasantly surprised initially as she thinks he is extremely handsome and was expecting someone a lot older. When Christian finally advises her that he is not the Duke, and that he is a poet and the real one comes in, they have some explaining to and the first thing that comes to Satine is that he is a writer and they were discussing the options for a player, in which she wanted the Duke to invest into.

Managing to bring the Duke onto her side, they now have to begin to write a play, which turns into a play based on themselves and the love that they have for each other, and them not being able to be together. They use different characters in the play to pull the wool over the Duke's eyes, however he isn't that stupid and soon realises that there is something more going on.

Moulin Rouge covers the story of two lovers that want to be together however it is impossible for that to happen. They try everything in their will, however there is always one thing getting in the way and has a lot of power over them.

Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman both perform excellent within their roles, and the vocals that they perform in my opion are outstanding. The music is pretty modern songs within, however tailored to the era and come across a little bit strange. The only song that I didn't like was their version of Madonna's Like A Virgin, I thought this was a little bit tacky how they portrayed and spoilt the film a little bit.

Christian and Satine perform a medley of love songs within the film, all entwined together with bits from various power ballads, which is at the height of the film and has got to be one of the best bits within it. The truly put there all into this particular scene and it goes without saying, they work extremely well together.

I found this film really good, but it wouldn' be to everyone's liking, each to their own at the end of the day.

I loved this, but then I was in the heady days of a romance at the time it was released, and it was so lovely to watch. Sarahx x
