Advantages: Visually impressive

Disadvantages: Slight lull in the middle

I was not sure that I would like Moulin Rouge, I was not totally convinced with the choices for the lead actors however I'm glad I gave it a chance as it turned out to be an enjoyable film, I do wish actually that I had got to see it on the big screen where all the bright colours and show tunes may have been even more spectacular.

Cast List

Nicole Kidman ... Satine

John Leguizamo ... Toulouse-Lautrec
Jim Broadbent ... Harold Zidler

Garry McDonald ... The Doctor
Jacek Koman ... The Unconscious Argentinean

Caroline O'Connor ... Nini Legs In The Air

Set in Paris at the turn of the centuary Ewan McGregor plays a young writer from England Christian who travels to the French capital and falls in love with the star of the faous Moulin Rouge show Sabine, played by the excellent Nicole Kidman. In what becomes a dangerous love triangle she is also loved by the wealthy Duke ( Richard Roxburgh ). Satine needs the money and support of the Duke however her heart is with Christian and hence she has to try and burn the candle at both ends.

A lot of the action has as a back drop the decadence of the club and the wide mix of people who frequent it or perform in its shows.

This is a spectacular flm with some great songs and performances, it is a love story but it is also a lovely bit of theatre as well with some outragous behaviour. Visually the whole film is impressive and I was pleasantly surprised at the performances of Kidman and McGregor in the lead roles.

Summary: Great musical drama.
