Moulin Rouge - I saw the film before UK release in Adelaide back in June. I wasn't sure what to expect - the Voulez Vous Couchez music video looked a bit raunchy so I had it in my head there would be lots of sex scenes - you know what imagination is! Nicole Kidman plays the leading lady - a courtesan/singer in a nightclub (The Moulin Rouge) in Paris. Ewen Macgregor looks gorgeous as the innocent young aspiring writer who falls in love with her. Jim Broadbent gives a brilliant performance as the owner of the nightclub. To begin with the film is very startling - lots of colour - shots flashing from one scene to another - a riot of sound and sights - 'how long can I deal with this?' I wondered. This settles down (a bit) after about 15 minutes and the story unfolds. The film revolves around the singers love for the impoverished writer but, the need for the financial security of the club and herself being as important, she feins love for a wealthy duke. Ill health lurks around the corner. Will true love conquer all? I won't give away the end - don't want to spoil anyone's enjoyment. Kidman was beautiful as was her voice. Broadbent should be nominated for an Oscar - simply for his version of 'Like a Virgin' - absolutely brilliant (I would have loved to have been on set while that was being shot!) Ewen Macgregor was too gorgeous - I could eat him! The music was an amazing mixture of modern songs - mixed, muddled and modified to fit the film, to my mind it worked well - it was not like any other musical I have ever seen before. A one off - one of a kind. I am not usually reduced to tears by films but this one had me and many others hopelessly weeping as we left. Sad innit? ON THE OTHER HAND.... I can fully understand why many people will hate this movie. It is different - so people will either love it or hate it. Whatever you feel about it - you wont fo
rget it.

- 24/08/01 Good Op. I am really looking forward to this film. I love more musicically orientated films such as this one and loved Coyote Ugly last summer. I have already got the soundtrack and it is rather strange and in a way give me a hint of what to expect. Thanx. :) Mike. |
