Advantages: Bold, Original, Daring
Disadvantages: It's very boldness puts some people off, It's not a "traditional film" per se
The genre of the movie musical is dragged kickin', screaming - and, yes, can-can dancing - into the 21st century with this 2001update of an oft-told story by Buz Lahermann of Romeo & Juliet (the DiCaprio one) fame. Should it work? No. It doesn't have any of the main ingredients of recent movie hits: there are no guns, high-tech story lines or woefully witty parodies of suburban life. What it has instead is a solid, believable storyline, backed up by good acting on behalf of Kidman and McGregor. So does it work? Yes. Telling the tale of the infamous Parisian nightclub Moulin Rouge at the turn of the century, Buz throws in a fairly hu-hum storyline - the rich guy falls in love with the courtesan - and mixes it with a dash of spice (some dazzling visuals and a downright raunchy stage line-up). Add one stomper of a soundtrack (who else could get away with mixing Madonna's "Material Girl" in with a powerful cover of Diamands Are Forever, and, more importantly, pull it off?) which is obviously geared for the mass market (Lady Marmalade, anyone?) yet nonetheless is a unique mix of opera and contemporary and you've got a sure-fire winner. And guess what? Kidman and McGregor got chemistry. AND they can sing! Any song that can incorporate stuff from Elton John's "Your Song" to U2's "Pride (In The Name of Love)" in the same breath has got my attention, and the Elephant Medley (don't ask!) does this admirably, achieveing the status of a classic song without striving to achieve MTV airtime. One sentence summary? A truly unique tale with an epic air to it, (and enough memorable tunes to keep you humming for a week )culminates in one of the year's best movies: go see it!
