Advantages: Concept, Theme, Set
Disadvantages: It belongs in the theatre, Not what you would percieve it to be, A con!
This film turned out to be entirely different to how I perceived it to be. Don't be fooled by the music folks. The chart topping single was fantastic. The concept breeds a fantastic movie idea, but wait till you see what it actually is. You might as well go to the theatre, because what this movie is is a pathetic theatrical attempt at a new art form. One that portrays a fantasy love story, stealing pre- written tunes and vocals from well known songs and trying to put some kind of perceptual meaning to the words that we all know. The Parisian set is about the only authentic aspect to an otherwise almost fairy tale pantomime. This is not the Moulin Rouge that we know folks (at least it's not the one I saw in Paris). It is a pathetic tongue in cheek drama, set long ago before the songs were even conceived. The attempt at comedy is so pathetic it borders on the amusing. The characters seem to have British moustaches and are almost slapstick in grace. I really perceived this movie to be some kind of music, dancing extravaganza. How wrong I was. I thought it would be one that would vibe to its theme, one that was exotic, sensual and exciting. Sorry folks but it's a con. Unless you know what you're doing and specifically like theatre (hang on I do), are personally recommended this movie by someone you know (pretty well), I would seriously give this a miss because it’s certainly nothing like anyone can describe! The plus points are the philosophical aspects to the morals of the story and the fact that inspiration does exist where love and life is the cause. The Parisian set is pure fantasy and quite convincing but of course this is spoiled by no hint of even a French word spoken in the whole film! Sorry folks this one deserves nothing but the impact that true hard-core theatre can only provide. 'Chitty Chitty bang bang', 'Singin' in the rain', and those kind of things spring to mind. But
at least we knew what those productions really were. They deserved to be successful. It is wasted here and deviously cons us of its identity due to the chart topping song that's still buzzing pleasantly in our brains. It is nothing like what it is supposed to be! The Parisians invented the 'Clip joint' in the Pigalle area of Paris. Now we have the cinemas turned into scam houses by the perceptions that press, trailers and arty reviewers provide. I like the idea that Love does exist and not just for money. It sure is a thought. The movie seems like it tests such an ideal. Nice costumes if you like them Camp. You have been warned!

- 10/09/01 Cheers. I can't believe it took 128 minutes all told. It seemed to drag a bit. (Does anyone remember how long Singin' in the Rain was?- Sorry that was a good one!). |
