WOW, WOW, WOW! Is all I could say when I came out of the cinema! It is probably one of the best films I have seen in a long time. I am writing this whilst listening to the soundtrack, which is almost definitely the best soundtrack, apart from 'The Sound of Music', which brings me onto the film.
The first 5-10 minutes was the most amazing cinematography I have seen in a long time. It absorbed me from the very beginning and the fast moving camera brought me into the world of 1899. It was the singing 'The Hills are Alive' that totally gripped me and made me laugh. I was at first disgusted that they could use such a fantastic song in such a modern film, but was soon appreciative of its clever tactics with the humour of being able to change such habitual songs into an extremely moving tune.
The narrative of two strangers falling in love and having to see each other secretively, so that the evil Lord doesn't kill Ewan's character seems like it would not interest many people, but on the contrary, it is still able to provoke tears and laughter throughout the film.
Being a film studies student at university, I have had to see many films from all eras and countries, and am learning to appreciate more and more all kinds of films. This is definitely not your everyday blockbuster movie, and if you are open minded enough to be able to appreciate new film styles, then this is certain to be your kind of film. But if however you prefer traditional films with the everyday usual film styles, then I am not so sure you will be able to enjoy it as much as I did. It is not everybody’s cup of tea, but I will still recommend it to everyone who has not yet seen it!
