Advantages: Great Acting, Great Music, MaTo many to list here

Disadvantages: Non-original storyline

This film is the best film I have seen in a long time. I was a bit dubious about it before I watched it, thinking firstly that it was going to be a bit of a chick flick that I wouldn't enjoy, and secondly that it was going to be another load of Baz Luhrman rubbish, as I really disliked Romeo and Julliet.

But as soon as the film started, I knew I was in for a big surprise. I had not seen any trailers for it, so was watching it due to word of mouth, and I have to say that the opening is a work of cinema genius, and the way of presenting 20th Century Fox has to be the most of ingenious I have ever seen.

The story begins, and we learn of a young writer who believes in Love above all things, who befriends a group of bohemians, who believe in Truth, Beauty, Freedom and Love, and who are writing a play about this. This writer, Christian (Ewan McGregor), ends up writing for a play that is to be performed at the Moulin Rouge, the raunchiest night club in paris, which is to be converted into a theatre. During this, he falls in love with Satine (Nicole Kidman), who unfortunately is vowed to the sponsor of the new theatre, the Duke (Richard Roxburgh).

Without giving anymore of the story away, we end up with a classic love triangle, held together with music and dancing, adaptions of classic love songs and tremendous acting. I must at this point mention Jim Broadbent, who plays Harry Zeidler, the owner of the Moulin Rouge. Broadbent plays this part excellently, and really portrays the humour and seriousness of this character.

Aall the actors play their parts excellently, and Nicole and Ewan have amazing voices, which I did not realise that they had.

This film has something for everyone, and althoug the storyline isnt necessarily the most original, there is certainly humour, music, emotion, great special effects, scenery and costumes, and an excellent film.

Baz Luhrman really impresses me with his direction in this film, a
nd after seeing this I would very much like to see some of his other films.

Moulin Rouge has something for everyone, and if you like musicals you'll especially like this! It really is Spectacular, Spectacular!

Only heard from one friend about this... and they said they turned it off after a bit. Have got it sitting on my desk all the same. Will give it a go myself.

I am a chick but hate chick flicks and like you have been similarly put off. I am still unconvinced that a film with a 'classic love triangle' won't be anything other than vomit inducing but thanks to you my friend won't have to bend my arm right round me to persuade me to get it out of the video shop next time.
