Advantages: A really good film
Disadvantages: none
I've always been a fan of Kevin Costner, and after seeing this movie I am even more so. The film is directed by Bruce Evans and was written by Reynold Gideon and has an 18 classification. It is not normally the type of film I go in for but on my son's recommendation we decided to watch it since he had the DVD. The film is a thriller is the loosest sense of the word but it does have some excellent atmospheric moments.
The overall plot is that of Mr Brooks ( Kevin Costner ) a highly successful businessman who has just received business man of the Year. Mr Brooks is frequently visited throughout the movie by Marshall ( William Hurt ) his alter ego. Marshall in the one who keeps Brooks aware of his addiction and bad side, for he does indeed have a peculiar addiction. He likes to kill people.
The film doesn't move at a particularly fast pace but there is sufficient thee to make the whole experience quite engrossing. As Brooks goes on the trail of his next victim, you see him go through a very precise process to eliminate any possibilities that he leave clues. The gun he uses to commit the crimes is covered in a plastic bag, and nothing is left to chance, except on the occasion he does make a crucial mistake, and a neighbouring peeping Tom captures the killing on camera and contacts Brooks about the sightings.
After consultation with Marshall he meets with Mr Smith ( Dane Cook ) thinking the usual thoughts that he was about to be blackmailed, but there is a twist here which is a major part of the rest of the movie. ( Sorry no Spoiler ). Mr Brooks daughter returns from school with the excuse she is pregnant, but Marshall convinces Brooks there is something afoot here, and Brooks eventually agrees.
Meanwhile detective Tract Atwood ( Demi Moore ) is in the process of tracking down the Thumbprint Killer ( Mr Brooks ), but there are few clues and she seems to be getting nowhere. She is also in the middle of a messy divorce which she wants settled quickly but just can't give in to her ex's demands.
The story evolves and slowly the two separate stories start to merge together, the performances are all pretty good and the general feel of the film is that of a little suspense, mixed with an I know what's happening now attitude, fortunately there are a few twists and that attitude quickly disperses as you get more and more involved.
As I said it is not usually my kind of movie but I really did enjoy it, and the performances of the cast. The music was however none to memorable. The film has a few quite gory scenes so the rating it has been given is perhaps justifiable although it is the atmospherics that make the movie, and of course a great performance by Costner. Al in all I was surprised as to how good it was and it is without any hesitation that I most certainly recommend this movie.
FILM ONLY
Summary: Good film with some nice twists.
