Mr. Nice Guy (DVD) ... August, 1998 at New Line Home Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, Closed-captioned, Colour, DVD-Video, Full Screen, Widescreen, NTSC / TV chef Jackie Chan is involuntarily involved in a gang war between stereotypical Italians and punks right out of A Clockwork Orange. Most of the cast is in a coma, and the plot is stupid, stupid, stupid. The reason to watch this is for Chan's gravity-defying stunts as he is chased through the streets of Melbourne by Aussie thugs trying to relocate missing cocaine. Chan is so innovative with his tricks that it is a shame he doesn't work with more intelligent material. Still, his fans should enjoy this slight adventure, as Chan's carefully choreographed martial art moves are as awesome as ever. Watch for a stunt involving a horse-drawn carriage, as it almost compensates for the lacklustre story line. --Rochelle O'Gorman, Amazon.com

... psychedelic outfits, add the kung-fu comedic Chan and you'll have 2 hours of rather pointless, yet strangely compelling action. This isn't a film for those who like good stories or believable action. It's not about that. It's a film for those who liked the original TV Batman series replete with "POW"s and "POOF"s. It's a film for those who appreciate Chapin-esque humour. Wild stunts abound and Chan's ability to play the comedy hero is there in bucket loads. There's something that doesn't qu...more

Premium Review Mr. Nice Guy (DVD): Short CHANged (475 words)

++FILM ONLY REVIEW++ Most people, I suspect, will have seen a Chan movie at some stage even if you're not into martial arts (which I'm not). He's headlined some fairly mainstream movies over the last 15 or so years including the likes of the Rush Hour series and Tuxedo. In some ways Mr Nice Guy is a rather odd affair compared to these big hits being far more comedic and slapstick in feel. Chan plays a TV chef, Jackie, who unwittingly gets caught up with an Australian reporter (Gabrielle Fitzpatrick) who has just scooped a video story about some drugs barons. The plot is simplicity itself: reporter has a video which two rival gangs must obtain ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Chef Chan and Cheesy Baddies (600 words)

This is yet another martial arts feast from the master of crazy stunts and comedic fighting - Jackie Chan. In this film he is a popular TV chef who becomes embroiled with a bunch of dangerous gangsters led by Richard Norton. Jackie helps a reporter to escape from the bad guys and ends up accidentally driving off with her evidence, which they will of course, do anything to get back. Now if you are a Chan fan you will know exactly what to expect and will love this film. If not I should explain that everything in this brand of martial arts film is subverted to the fight scenes, stunts and explosions. The fight scenes are incredibly fast and furious, the stunts are ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Mr. Nice Guy (DVD): A chef once made a good action hero but this has put a stop ... (257 words)

"Mr Nice Guy" it sucks, I wish I could leave the review at that but for the sake of humanity I have to ghive you a good reason why you should never waste 2 hours of you life on this no hope drivel. Jackie Chan has got to be my second favourite martial arts movie star, after Bruce Lee, with his lightning fast reactions and comedy motion he is a great actor to watch. The movie has him as a chef who through some twist of fate has to get chased and brought into many fights, to protect those close to him. The action scenes are quick and have a lot of comedy content, though the dialogue is tedious and slow occassionally sounding like a voice over. Sammo ...  Read the complete review
