Released at the end of 1993 this two hour comedy follows the exploits of a family man who, being separated from his wife, will do anything to spend time with his children...
** BRIEF PLOT **
When Daniel Hillard, (played by Robin Williams) loses his job as a voice actor it is the last straw for his wife, Miranda, (played by Sally Field)... well that and a party for there 12 year old son which she had forbidden, ...so the outcome is a separation for the once happy couple.
Leaving Daniel with seeing his three children, Christopher, (played by Matthew Lawrence) and his daughters, 14 year old Lydia, (played by Lisa Jakub) and his 5 year old Natalie, (played by Mara Wilson), one evening per week.
So when he hears that Miranda is looking for a housekeeper he comes up with a rather bizarre idea to spend more time with his kids.., involving his brother skills as a make-up artist, a mass of rubber and his own voice skills..., only his plan has many flaws, leading to no end of difficult and a lot of rather peculiar situation.
The troubles for Daniel escalate when his estranged wife begins a new relationship with Stuart Dunmeyer, (played by Pierce Brosnan), leading to even more disastrous events for Daniels alter ego...
** IN CONCLUSION **
What a great movie and a rather bizarre story line, it will definitely have you rolling on the floor... so together with the many hilarious scenes from the brilliantly talented Williams you'll be giggling throughout.
It is basically what Williams does best, taking a rather bizarre story line and creating something that is so ridiculous it is simply hilarious.
The character he plays, through most of the movie he does with perfection, dealing with the hilarious mishaps as only this man can do... keeping the slapstick comedy rolling through to the very end... from the accidental burning of a bra, whilst still wearing it, to having your face run over by a truck... (sort of)...Once the slapstick starts it simply wont stop...
Although it is stupidly obvious to the viewer who the new housekeeper is, (but for some strange reason not to Miranda), with the face covered in rubber and a mouth full of teeth, it doesn't spoil the entertainment of the movie... (although some people may disagree, saying that such obviousness couldn't be overlooked by anyone).
In the middle of all the comedy there are a few heavier scenes, usually concerning the relationship between Daniel and his children, but these are done with a certain style and seem to delve into the heartache of parents being separated from there children, possibly opening up some very interesting conversations in some households.
In all this is a worth while movie to watch and will be a pleasing choice for all.
There are no horrific scenes to scare the children, (unless you include Williams in a dress that is...?), so it is a good family comedy movie, possibly for a quiet Sunday afternoons viewing...
