Advantages: genuine comical bend over with laughter scenes!
Disadvantages: somewhat ad
I must say that I was impressed by the way that the producers of this movie managed to produce such a genuinely heart-warming and humorous comedy against a rather dark backdrop with divorce as the major thematic feature. Robin Williams, as usual, excelled in his comical acting and I was in total admiration in front of the acting of Sally Field and the children. I have been watching this movie ever since I was a child and I still watch it all over again. This is because it is the sort of movie which will really tug at your heart-strings and make you cry both with laughter and sadness at times. I must however admit that Robbie Williams was so, so, so marvellous in his role that he out shadowed the whole cast- including the appearance of Pierce Brosnan.
The plot opens with the typical dysfunctional family: Both parents are extremely loving towards their three children but are completely different from each other. Sally Fields is hard working and disciplined while Robin Williams is a floating actor who is more relaxed and tolerant upon the children's discipline. Sally Field decides to leave her husband, and in a desperate attempt to win her back Robin Williams dresses up as an endearing old lady in order to work as the children's nanny and hence be closer to them. Will he succeed in winning his wife and kids back?
Robin Williams, as Mrs Doubfire, has captivated the hearts of adults and children alike. The lovable granny who does a wonderful dance scene with a hover and a broom is witness to Williams' incredible talent as a comedian. His facial expressions are suddenly those of an old woman, his movements controlled and his body language as neutral as he possibly can. I personally felt that playing such a highly comical role could be quite difficult, but Robin Williams played not only the comical role, but he handled the old woman's role to perfection. I would genuinely recommend this movie to you in order to see Williams trudging around in the bodysuit which would open new avenues for other such movies as Big Mama. I also loved the various expressions on Sally Field's face throughout the movie. I believe that she is one actress who can certainly take close-up shots in any situation because she handles the expressions with an incredible mastery.
DVD Extras include:
* Director's Commentary
* Behind the Scene footage
* Makeup test/ Application trailers
* Interview with Chuck Jones
This is certainly a movie to recommend. I love the themes and the realistic depiction of divorce and personally believe that this will bring both laughter and solace to people who've been through that experience.
Thanks for reading!
Summary: He'll win his family back...at every cost!
