Mrs Henderson Presents (DVD) ... released 20 March, 2006 at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / The blitz-bombing of London in World War II provides the serious backdrop for the uplifting entertainment of Mrs. Henderson Presents, a delightful comedy anchored by the flawless performances of Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins. After losing a son in World War I, and becoming a widow in 1937, the wealthy and respectable Mrs. Henderson (Dench) decides that the best way to support soldiers going off to battle is to give them a wartime send-off they'll never forget. Thus, she buys and renovates the Windmill Theatre in London's Soho district, hires Mr. Vivian Van Damm (Hoskins) as the impresario of an all-day musical variety show called "Revudeville," and secures permission from the censorious Lord Cromer (Christopher Guest) to include naked women in the stage show--on the condition that the ladies remain still onstage to qualify as "art," like nude portraits in a gallery, with the "foliage" of their "midlands" discreetly obscured. "Revudeville" is an instant hit, British propriety remains tastefully intact, and as The Windmill's fortunes rise, fall, and rise again, Mrs. Henderson Presents develops an emotional depth and good-natured nobility that's perfectly matched to the comedy of tweaking British manners. Working from an eloquently witty, fact-based screenplay by Martin Sherman, director Stephen Frears (High Fidelity) brings out the best in a well-chosen cast, and Andrew Dunn's cinematography (enhanced by judicious use of digital effects to show the London blitz in progress) casts a warm, inviting glow over this winning tale of show-biz tenacity in the best and worst of times. --Jeff Shannon

Will Mrs Henderson get her licence for the nude show and what will happen to the theatre once the war starts? Will Vivian and Mrs Henderson ever be able to get on and stop all the bickering????? I really did enjoy this film from the very start to the end. The story line was based on true events which added to the whole experience. Premium Review Mrs Henderson Presents (DVD): Mrs Henderson Presents...nudity, shock, horror! (746 words)

Despite not knowing the first thing about anything theatrical the recently widowed and very wealthy Mrs Henderson purchases an old run down theatre in London's West End and appoints Vivian Van Damm as the manager. This is a film based on true events and it is a film that always intrigued me enough to want to watch it. The other evening I finally got the chance. Mrs Laura Henderson, played by Dame Judi Dench is a 70 year old widow who on losing her husband has just returned back to England from India. She ponders what to do with her life, confiding in her best friend Lady Conway, played by Thelma Barlow, who informs her that wealthy older women in ...  Read the complete review

Mrs Henderson Presents is a film which was my choice as I like Judy Dench. I had heard quite a lot about how good the film was so when I saw it for a bargain price I snapped it up. Judy Dench stars as Mrs Henderson who has recently lost her husband as is finding life is getting boring. Her best friend tells her that she needs to find a hobby. Everyone is shocked when Mrs Henderson takes this to the extreme and buys the Windmill Theatre! As she has no experience of the theatre and how it works she seeks a manager, She finds a very interesting man, Vivian Van Damm, played by Bob Hoskins who agrees to manage the theatre as long as he is given total ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Mrs Henderson Presents (DVD): How a legendary show got started (263 words)

I truly didn't expect anything much from this film. Judy Dench just shines through the whole movie, she plays the Mrs Henderson of the films title. she has just become a widow and has a lot of disposable income & her friend and confidant (Thelma Barlow of Coronation Street and Dinner Ladies fame) advises her to get a hobby or do something with her money. so she buys a theatre. In Windmill Street, London. Ah, legends are about to be forged but no-one yet knows it. She has no idea how to run a theatre, so she uses the old boy network to hire herself a manager to run the theatre. enter Mr Bob Hoskins playing Vivian van Damme and looking slightly like he did ...  Read the complete review

I really wanted to see this film as soon as I knew it was going to be made, mainly because Will Young appeared in it. So as soon as it was released off I popped to my local cinema, not quite knowing what to expect. The film is set around the start of the second world war, Mrs Henderson played by Judy Dench is recently widow, She is a wealthy woman and not used to being alone, she goes to her friend Lady Conway (Thelma Barlow) for advice on what to do. Lady Conway tells her that being a widow is easy, there is no one stopping her from doing the things she wants and spending what she likes. Mrs Henderson passes by an old run down theatre for sale when ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Mrs Henderson Presents (DVD): will young (227 words)

I caught this film on telly one night as the only reason this film jumped out at me originally was because Will Young is in it, as I think he has a great voice and after winning pop Idol he deserves it, he makes an appealing debut as Bertie the male lead on stage. This film is based on a true story. This film is based in World War II; Mrs Henderson is played by Dame Judi Dench, who after her husband passes away buys The Windmill Theatre along with the help of Mr Vivian Van Dam played by Bob Hoskins whom becomes her business partner. The Germans are bombing London, but the roar of the Windmill is all that can be heard as Mrs Henderson ...  Read the complete review
