Film Only Review:
Meet the ageing popstar Alex Fletcher from the band 'pop' which was an 80's pop sensation who we see with the rest of the band members in their typical 80's style music video (this is must see for Hugh Grant fans by the way like his dancing scene in love actually lol). He makes his money by doing little gigs but the money is drying up rather fast however he is happy enough to live off the past and doesn't seem to want to be back in the public eye particulary anyway.
Into his life comes Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore) clumsy, quirky and all over the place who comes to water his plants in his apartment as his usual lady is away on her hols.
Alex is asked to write a song for one of the biggest female acts out called 'Cora' but whilst doing so with the help of a lyricist he hears Sophie making up lyrcs herself and sacks the lyracist and convinces Sophie to help him write a song...the fact is though shes never done it before and there is a fast deadline to get it done as other 'has been' acts have also been asked to write a song for Cora.
Alex is the melody man and Sophies the wordie girl and given the title 'Way Back Into Love' to work with they spend hours trying to write a few verses to which they can present to Cora and would give Alex the chance to sing the duet with her in her concert.
However as the writing progresses we learn more about Alex and who he is and see Sophie as quite a hurt person having gone out with a professor that used her for inspiration for his top selling book and wherever Sophie goes there are reminders of it and she even bumps into him when out with Alex and Alex very much wants her to move on with her life and she feels that she cant and that shes been humilated and cant seem to move past that.
After a time though it becomes clear that feelings are becoming involved with the pair but Sophie is a romantic and ruled by her heart though Alex is much more buisness like in his approach to romance and doesn't really appear to be aware of what love is. Can the song be written in time? Will the words of the song mean anything to them both and will Alex have the song in his hand to sing with Cora at Maddison Square Gardens at one of the biggest and best concerts of all time.
My Verdict:
This goes on my top 10 films of all time. Not because it has a particular message to give but just that it makes me smile and laugh in all the right places. I am a quite fan of Hugh Grant and this role gives him one he is most suited to........quirky English gentleman role and I love him as Alex. He plays the role of a quick witted but still soft at times guy and the lovely Drew Barrymore is again suited to her role as a vunerable at times but strong deep down woman who just wants to be loved for herself. I cant say much about the acting from others as Hugh and Drew outshine them all though there was a few amusing scenes with Sophie's sister who was a big fan of Alexs when they were younger!
There is nothing at all wrong with this rom com in my opinion. Its sentimental and sweet, predictable and not all that thought provoking really but I can watch this over and over again and still it makes me chuckle which is the very reason I have this in my huge dvd collection.
Rated PG and with a runtime of 96 minutes this gets a thumbs up from me especially for us girly girls out there, and for older women who wanna see Hugh girate and general be a bit of a prat lol
Summary: Love this film!
