My best friend's wedding is a romantic comedy and was released in June 1997 by TriStar Pictures and has a run time of 105 minutes. The film was nominated for 13 awards but only ended up winning 2, both for Rupert Everett.

Julianne Potter is 27 and a food critic in New York. When her and her best friend, Michael were younger, they made a promise that if neither of them were married by the time they were 28, they would marry each other. Three weeks before Julianne's 28th birthday, Michael calls her and tells her he's in love and he's getting married, making her realise that she's loved him all along.

Before heading to Chicago for the wedding, Julianne decides to sabotage the relationship, in order to get the man for herself. That is before Kimberly, Michael's fiancé, asks her to be the maid of honour. Kimberly is only 20, from a rich family and a student at the University of Chicago. She's blonde, bubbly and loud, everything Julianne isn't.

Julianne has lots of petty attempts at ruining Kimberly and Michael's relationship but doesn't seem to get anywhere so she asks her gay best friend George to come out to Chicago and help. George reluctantly comes to her rescue, but isn't impressed when he finds out that Julianne has told Michael that her and George are engaged in an attempt to make him jealous. Still nothing is working so George advises Julianne to just tell Michael the truth. On the morning before the wedding, she sets out to do just this but her plan doesn't exactly go to plan. Michael knows everything, but which woman does he choose?

Cast
Julianne - Julia Roberts
Michael - Dermot Mulroney
George - Rupert Everett
Kimberly - Cameron Diaz

My best friend's wedding is one of my all time favourite films. What I really liked about it was that there aren't happy endings all around like most romantic comedies. It's good to see someone not get what they want for a change. Most romantic comedies are so predictable but this one is an exception. The comedy in this film was a bit slapstick at times, some would say over the top, but the same parts make me giggle every time.

This film has such a wide range of main characters that are all completely different. Kim is so crazy and loud whereas Julianne is a bit more quiet and reserved but it was great to see how each of them got on, even though some of them had nothing in common. No matter how hard Julianne tries to hate Kim, it just doesn't seem possible.

Rupert Everett was my favourite and played George fantastically. Although he was supposed to be quite serious most of the time and keep Julianne in line, he also had quite a few funny moments. I really found it funny when Julianne tells Michael she's engaged to George and he has to really try hard to not act so camp, which just ends up making him look silly, if not a little crazy. He does so well to play a variety of characters and I don't think I've ever seen him in something where I didn't like him.

Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz were both amazing as always and I never seem to have a bad word to say about either of them, no matter what film they're in or what role they are playing. They can both play funny or serious really well.

I don't really class this film as a normal chick flick because I know a lot of guys that like it too. The comedy far out weighs the romance which is why I think it is better than most films in this genre. I just can't believe its 12 years old already though.

Summary: Great film

I remember this coming out, it was the film that really launched Everett - he was originally supposed to have quite a small part but the test audiences loved him so much they wrote and filmed extra scenes for him.
