This 1993 movie by Mike Leigh explores the darker side of human emotions by focusing on a group of characters over one bizarre and eventful night. The main character, Johnny (played by David Thewlis), is the epitome of anti-hero. In the opening scene we see him having sex with a woman in an alleyway in Mosside. He gets violent with her and she runs away after threatening to tell her boyfriend what has happened. Johnny runs away himself, to London in a stolen car, and looks up an old girlfriend. A classic from Mike Leigh, Naked is a tale of depression, paranoia and relationships. It's like a teen-anxst movie but for the twenty-somethings. David Thewliss carries the film beautifully. He has many monologues and one-sided conversations and Leigh's words mixed with Thewliss' emotion is a winning combination. There is a wonderful scene between the lead character and a security guard. Almost a monologue by Thewliss, he explains his conspiracy theory in full to a night security guard patrolling an empty office building. For me, this scene is a classic of all time. Very powerful.
