Naked (DVD) ... at Shock / Features of the DVD: PAL / In between his breakthrough film (Life Is Sweet) and his world sensation (Secrets and Lies), filmmaker Mike Leigh created his most abrasive and daring film, Naked. This "Angry Young Man" for the 1990s follows an acidic wanderer (Cannes award winner David Thewlis) who observes a corrosive Britain. An intellectual, bitter film filtered with debauchery and black humour, Naked follows the bemusing Johnny as he crosses in and out of doorways, drifting into old acquaintances and new lost souls. It is more of a character film than sheer entertainment and thus it can be hard to watch but it offers one of the great performances of the 1990s. Thewlis would have been an Oscar shoo-in if he'd worn a dinner jacket and repressed his emotions. He didn't, and his brilliant work went unrecognised in mainstream America. --Doug Thomas

Premium Review Nakedly rubbish (160 words)
by - written on 08/11/00 (23 readings)
Rating:

Even by Mike Leigh's inflated standards, a vastly overrated slice of late-night urban sleaze. There's no mistaking the quality of David Thewlis' towering performance as a violent, resentful Northern loser who heads south to cause trouble for his ex, and has a series of weird encounters on the streets of the capital. Perhaps this is supposed to be a study of misogyny, but the film's endless catalogue of grim assaults and arguments are wearying after a while, and no amount of cinematic skill can disguise the laughably over-played yuppie villain subplot (Greg Cruttwell's performance as the Thatcherite rapist is agonising). If you can ...  Read the complete review
