Even by Mike Leigh's inflated standards, a vastly overrated slice of late-night urban sleaze. There's no mistaking the quality of David Thewlis' towering performance as a violent, resentful Northern loser who heads south to cause trouble for his ex, and has a series of weird encounters on the streets of the capital. Perhaps this is supposed to be a study of misogyny, but the film's endless catalogue of grim assaults and arguments are wearying after a while, and no amount of cinematic skill can disguise the laughably over-played yuppie villain subplot (Greg Cruttwell's performance as the Thatcherite rapist is agonising).
