National Lampoon's Vacation (DVD) ... released 21 June, 1999 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: Dubbed, PAL, Widescreen / Vacation paved the way for the John Hughes movie dynasty of the 1980s. Written by Hughes (who would go on to write, direct, and/or produce The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Uncle Buck, Home Alone, and so on) and directed by Harold Ramis (Caddyshack, Groundhog Day, Stuart Saves His Family), the first Vacation movie introduces us to the all-American Griswold family: father Clark (Chevy Chase), mother Ellen (Beverly D'Angelo), son Rusty (future Hughes staple Anthony Michael Hall), and daughter Audrey (Dana Barron). They all pile into the car for a cross-country road trip to Walley World, stopping along the way to view the world's biggest ball of twine. John Candy, Imogene Coca, and Randy Quaid (as yokel Cousin Eddie) pop up along the way. The movie was a big hit, and was followed by several sequels--National Lampoon's European Vacation, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, and National Lampoon's Vegas Vacation--but this one is still probably the freshest and funniest of the bunch. --Jim Emerson

However, it's done in such a light-hearted and zany manner, you'd be forgiven for forgetting Chevy had killed his eldery mother and their dog in their journey. Christine Brinkley makes a fleeting appearance in a Ferrari and John Candy also makes a brief, but hilarious, cameo at the end with "Roy Wally". For some classic one-liners and some expensive slapstick involving a beaten up station wagon and lost luggage, this is a must-...more

Premium Review National Lampoon's Vacation (DVD): Wally World (436 words)
by - written on 09/12/08 (Very useful, 96 readings)
Rating:

National Lampoons Vacation is the first film in the series that feature the Griswold family's adventures. This film came out in 1983 and is definitely not bad considering it was made 25 years ago. This is still one of my all time favourites as it never fails to make me laugh. The two main actors that stay consistent in all the Griswold films is Chevy Chase who plays Clark Griswold (the dad) and Beverly D'Angelo, who plays Ellen Griswold (the mum). The reason why I'm explaining that these two don't change throughout the films is because their two children; Rusty and Audrey are played by different actors in each film and look nothing alike. It's quite funny how ...  Read the complete review

Rating:

The film National Lampoons Vacation Was the First in a series of films that followed a family in one of their many holiday mishaps. Although there is a film called National Lampoons Animal house, it is the odd one out of the films. The first one and possibly the best one is the Vacation, although the film, is about 17 years old now. It follows the Griswold Family across the USA as they drive to their holiday Destination in California. Being from Chicago, the family need to drive 2400 miles! First they must pick up their car for the trip. A new sports car. Instead, the wrong car is delivered and turns out to be an ugly Pea Green wood ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review National Lampoon's Vacation (DVD): Fantastic! (220 words)
by - written on 06/12/08 (Useful, 16 readings)
Rating:

I love the series and this is no exception. It is a fantastic film filled with laughs all the way through. In the film, Chevy Chase goes on holiday by a road trip to the theme park, Wally World. They stop along the way to view the biggest ball of twine in the world. They encounter many problems which make it funny. The cast does a great job delivering the laughs. The story is very good and easy to understand. The film is very funny and you will laugh all the way through. The picture and sound quality is ok. The soundtrack is fun. They get up to some silly things, which makes it even more funny as you tell them not to do ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Great slapstick fun (187 words)

Rating:

The first and arguably the best National Lampoon film in the series. A youthful looking Beverley D'Angelo, as well as Chevy Chase, take on Wally World in their station wagon. A typical Harold Ramis outing, this film never fails to raise a laugh amongst the hardest of critics. Bawdy and sometimes downright rude, the movie deals with some contentious issues such as divorce, death and animal slaughter. However, it's done in such a light-hearted and zany manner, you'd be forgiven for forgetting Chevy had killed his eldery mother and their dog in their journey.
