Katherine Bigalow (Director - Point break) managed in 1987 to reinvent an entire legend. Before this film, Vampires had always been pointy-toothed baldies or suave Aristocrats, able to turn into wolves or bats or fog. Near Dark managed to make vampires more human, more realistic and in doing so, a damn sight more scary. Caleb (Adrian Padsar) lives on a sprawling farm in the American mid-west with his Father, Loy (Tim Thomerson) and his much younger sister Sarah (Marcy Leeds). Out cruising one night, he runs into Mae (Jenny Wright). A girl most certainly not from around there and by strict definition to the bored farmer, incredibly interesting. Back in his car ... It has become somewhat en vogue to move the vampire mythology from the old haunted East European castles to modern day America. In fact, virtually every single vampire movie made in the last 20 years has done just that, with a few notable exceptions, and as such have lost much of the romance and allure that the genre once held. However, it has also served to breathe new life into an area of movie making which can at best be described as 'over-subscribed'. Many of the more modern vampire movies have taken the more 'camp' aspects of the genre and played upon them, sometimes with excellent results, but more often than not, producing another dull ... Directed by Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break and Strange Days), this film is a dark reminder of some of the 1940’s and 1950’s pictures. While Near Dark certainly won’t change the world, it is refreshing to get a completely different telling of the vampire as a real-life monster. In the common vampire movie the vampire is usually a member of the aristocracy (take Count Dracula for instance, isolated but for the few who happen upon his castle). In Near Dark there are no immortals in black silk flying around and transforming themselves into bats or wolves, etc. There is no unearthly mist or eerie shadows that follow anyone. There are no menacing ... Read the complete review

This film is not widely known about, even by vamipre fans, although it should appeal to a lot wider audiance. The story goes something like this... Boy and girl meet, girl bites boy, boy turns into vampire, vampire clan dont like him because he wont kill. Basically he wants to go home to his father and sister, but he loves the girl, and cant survive without her. That was a very rough telling of the story, but it is a good watch. There isnt as much violence in it as you might expect from a vampire movie, but it is more the lifestyle they are trying to convey, rather than the violence, although there is that there too. I would reccommend ... Read the complete review
