INTRODUCTION Out of all the works in the anime canon there is probably no other show that has raised so much speculation, questions, interpretations and controversy as Shin Seiki Evangelion (or Neon Genesis Evangelion as it has been translated). Love it or hate it, the universally accepted opinion is that it is one of the best anime series ever created, if not THE best. The plot, to put it very simplistically, deals with Shinji Ikari, a 14-year-old boy who has to protect the Earth with his fellow pilots Rei Ayanami and Asuka Langley Soryu against a group of giant monsters called Angels (Shito) with the use of the equally big, mecha-type robots called ... Let me explain a little what Neon Genesis Evangelion is, and why I’ve chosen to devote this opinion to a sole Japanese series. Evangelion is: A Japanese anime series A fresh and original idea A great story with a weird ending Addictive and compulsive Full of Western and Eastern religion and mythology. Evangelion isn’t: Just another Akira Boring For kids Lacking in Eastern strangeness Right, now that’s out the way, its down to work. I hope I haven’t lost you already, I know when some people see the word anime or realise that someone else is ... Read the complete review

Neon Genesis Evangelion has been a big hit in the anime world and deservedly so. The 26 episode TV series made by Gainax may look like any other big robot show, but there's so much more depth to it. Watching it through to the highly debated end episodes will reveal this as the show transforms itself through out. At first things are relatively upbeat and not that distinct from other mecha shows, however things soon descend to a far darker level. Shinji Ikari is the main character, a 14 year old boy and reluctant pilot of an Eva unit. Controlling the Eva he defends Tokyo against the onslaught of mysterious, giant creatures called Angels. Shinji becomes a ... Read the complete review

Better cash in your Dooyoo miles quickly, as half are you are going to die in September... Set fifteen years after the Second Impact, a distaster which caused massive flooding and climate changes in the Earth killing off half the worlds human population, Evangelion is the story of Shinji Ikari. A loner, afraid to let anyone close to him though fear of emotional pain, Shinji is strangly called to Tokyo-3 by his estranged father, Gendou. Gendou deserted his son soon after the death of Shinji's mother, leaing Shinji emotionally scarred. Although somewhat reluctant, Shinji never the less shows up in Tokyo-3 at possibly the worst moment. You ... Read the complete review

Being a busy old hector nowadays, it's rare for me to watch all that much TV. I'll catch an episode of something here and there but I rarely get to see a whole series of a specific show. The only way around this for me is acquiring the DVD boxset and watching the whole thing at leisure over the course of a few days/weeks. After a lengthy discussion over the joys of anime with a friend, he offered to let me borrow his copy of 'Neon Genesis Evangelion', one of the most well known of Japanese animation TV series. Having never seen an anime TV series before (but plenty of anime films), I decided to give it a go. The results were staggering. In the year ... Read the complete review
