Advantages: Romantic and inspiring
Disadvantages: Some really painful bullying scenes
Drew Barrymore shines as always in this romantic comedy with underlying social themes. This movie has been highly acclaimed by The Boston Globe and the New York Post for being "A Triumph!" and highly praised Drew Barrymore for being "Brilliant" in the movie. I will have to say that I completely agree with them on all counts.
The plot is about an ex-geek, ex-bullied newspaper reporter Josie Geller who finally gets her big break as she is sent undercover to play a high school student. The problem is that her own high school experience has been worse than a nightmare: She used to be known as "Josie-Grossy" and has been the victim of the cruelest pranks and jokes.
Drew Barrymore as young Josie is heart-wrenchingly marvellous as she plays the most bullied girl at school. Many of these scenes have made me cry because of the realistic aspect of it all. One can only imagine the pain and disenchantment at the heart of such a left-our and tortured character. Drew Barrymore draws the line between the popular kids at school and those who are left in the background as she incarnates both teenage and adult Josie. In addition, I love the way that she depicts the long-term repercussions of bullying. Like English teacher in the movie says, "when we're in disguise, we feel better", and that is exactly what Drew Barrymore goes on to show as the adult Josie who feels like she is having a second chance at living high school all over again. However, the movie remains true to its main thematic element as it shows how the effects of years and years of bullying turned the adult Josie into an awkward, insecure and plain person. Will a second chance at high school change that or will it make the repercussions of being bullied even worse?
What I like about this movie is that despite his dark theme, it remains true to the very essence of Romantic Comedies. Yes, it is a really romantic movie despite the fact that the main theme is bullying. I will not elaborate on the elements which turn this film into a romantic comedy for fear of giving spoilers away but I would say that it will give you that warm glow in your heart! The cast is fresh and dynamic and there is some terrific dialogue included.
Overall, this is certainly a movie to watch. The feel-good fuzzy feeling is most certainly there!
Thanks for reading!

- 20/07/09 I personally thought it was a rubbish film. "Teenage" Barrymore looked about 30 and it just didn't seem realistic. Nice review though. |
