Next (DVD) ... Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore ... / DVD released 24 September, 2007 at Entertainment in Video / Features of the DVD: PAL / The weirdness of actor Nicolas Cage and the weirdness of science-fiction author Philip K. Dick seem like a natural fit. The premise, taken from a short story by Dick, is a good one: A mediocre Las Vegas magician named Chris Johnson (Cage) can see into the future--but only about two minutes at the most. Just enough to pull off his act and to make some money at the gambling tables, so long as he's discreet. Unfortunately, he hasn't been discreet enough; a government agent (Julianne Moore) has sussed out his precognitive talent and wants to use him to track down terrorists. But all Johnson cares about is a beautiful young woman (Jessica Biel, The Illusionist) that he can see in his future--much further in his future than he's ever seen before. Next has flashes that point to a much, much better movie than it turned out to be. A sequence in which Johnson, clairvoyantly explores all the different permutations of how he might approach his mystery woman is both funny and thought-provoking, and when Johnson avoids pursuers by knowing just the right moment to turn a corner or duck his head, it's smart and suspenseful. Unfortunately, the terrorist part of the plot is utterly perfunctory and precognition is reduced to an action movie gimmick. Somewhere in there is the kernel of a romantic comedy about precognition that's just waiting to be made. Cage gives a solid if unsurprising performance, Moore is basically earning a paycheck, but Biel is unexpectedly good (and her part is considerably better-written than your usual romantic interest); her performance suggests a better future than anyone might have predicted. --Bret Fetzer

However, when he sees into the future, his OWN future changes, and it isn't long before Agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) comes a-knocking in order to see if he can help with a terrorist matter. Meanwhile, he has to work out what Liz (Jessica Biel), a woman he saw in his dreams and then actually met, has to do with everything while keeping ahead of various sides who want to exploit his powers for various purposes. The idea is a strange mix of things we've seen before - the premonition aspect of ...more

Premium Review Next (DVD): Time Flop! (983 words)

NEXT! I needed something silly and dumb for yet another wet weekend forecast and so after speed dialing my ex girlfriend I got no luck, so instead I decided a trip to Blockbusters would be more rewarding. Because its nearly April most of us have seen all the films we want to see on the cheap rack and so scratching around on the bottom shelf to make up a 3 for £.6.50 deal at Blockies. Although 'Next' is below the plimsole-line rating on Imdb.com at 6.2, I had little choice but to rent this from what was left to find three remotely watchable films with everyone else going for cheap DVDs over their ex's... Premium Review For His Next Trick (594 words)

When watching films there are always certain rules to abide by. One of them for me is don't expect anything where Nic Cage wears a dodgy looking hairpiece to be any good. Case in point, Gone In 60 Seconds and most recently Ghost Rider. In Next, he sports some nice flowing locks carefully integrated with his receding hairline. It's a brave attempt but still could have done with some CGI enhancement. The film sees play Vegas magician Cris Johnson. His act consists of seemingly making things happen just after predicting them. Only it's not a trick, he has the gift of seeing two minutes into the future of his life. Such a skill comes in handy when living in Las ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Next (DVD): Two Minute Warning (870 words)

If I happened to be driving along one day and a lorry containing radioactive sludge crashed and poured its contents on to me I hope that my superpower isn't seeing the future. Personally, I imagine knowing what's going to happen would be depressing as you can tell how everyone is going to die (in the case of being smothered in radioactive waste - probably pretty soon!). This is not even to mention the inherent impossibilities of seeing the future because as soon as you know what your future is you have the ability to change it. Surely by gaining this power I would cause the very fabric of times and space to tear? Then again maybe I have too much time on my hands and ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Just 2 Minutes of Your Time (933 words)

Sometimes, just sometimes, a movie comes along and surprises, giving you something you hadn't expected. In my case, I love most things associated with sci-fi writer, Philip K Dick and having enjoyed the screen adaptations of "Total Recall", "Minority Report" and most famously "Blade Runner", it was a delightful revelation that the movie "Next" (not to be confused with the retail chain) was a loose adaptation of a Dick short story called "The Golden Man". What would happen if you could see two minutes into your own future? Two minutes in which you could alter things and shape your destiny. That's exactly the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Next (DVD): Naff sci-fi actioner (293 words)

note: also appears in part on Flixster and The Student Room Next is a strange science fiction action film that is very, and I repeat VERY loosely based on the science fiction short story The Golden Man by Philip K. Dick. The film depicts Cris Johnson (Nicholas Cage), a man who has the power to see two minutes into the future, and harnesses this to his advantage by working as a magician in Las Vegas, being a big hit with nobody able to tell how he is able to be so prescient. However, when he sees into the future, his OWN future changes, and it isn't long before Agent Callie Ferris (Julianne Moore) comes a-knocking in order to see if he can help with a terrorist ...  Read the complete review
