Next is the story of a Las Vegas magician, Cris Johnson, who possesses the ability to see 2 minutes into the future. An FBI agent, who is trying to find a stolen nuclear device stolen by terrorists, thinks that Cris might be able to help her find the nuclear device before it's too late. Unfortunately, Cris can only see 2 minutes into the future---and he doesn't want to help the FBI because he doesn't want to end up as a lab rat!
Although Cris does manage to evade capture by the FBI, he is unable to stop his girlfriend from being captured by the terrorists who want to stop him from helping the FBI. Of course, needless to say, he joins up with the FBI in an effort to save his girlfriend.
This is just one of those movies that promises it all, and never delivers.
First of all, the acting is, once again in the case of Nicolas Cage, absolutely tedious. I'm thinking Cage would do better as a theatrical drama actor on stage---he is just way too intense for a cheap Hollywood movie. Secondly, if it weren't for the special-effects and the dribble of action that comes our way every now and again, there would be no movie.
Finally, 'Next' does not have an ending! What it has is the beginnings of yet another boring movie where everyone is running around and nothing actually happens.
'Next' is a 96 minute movie where the main character sees 2 minutes into the future, and spends the entire time working out different alternatives that might change what is about to happen---and the story, which you think is actually progressing, is in fact, motionless. In other words, its like watching a movie where you think something is actually happening, but then the character wakes up and you realize it was only a dream, and then they walk around, something happens again, and they wake up again, and you realize that is was another dream---making it a dream within a dream! Complicated? Join the club.
Nothing actually ever happens in this movie, it's like a dream within a dream within a dream---until the character finally finds the correct move that will change the next 2 minutes---and even then, once he accomplishes the right move, the future is changed once again and he has to start all over!
All I can say to this is---what a major disappointment!
Summary: A man who possesses the ability to see 2 minutes into the future is hunted by the FBI.
