Advantages: Ben Stiller and excellent effects

Night at the museum is one of those films that I really fancied when it was at the cinema but always went for something else. Having finally got round to watching it this weekend I can honestly say that I made a mistake. Although it is obviously good to watch on a 42" HD TV at home, the stunning effects seen throughout would surely have been better suited to a cinema viewing.

The movie is always going to be a good one in my eyes as Ben Stiller can do no wrong with me. His comedic genius is evident right from the start here, albeit in a subtle way. The general plot of the movie is good and works well throughout. This will surely make a good Christmas movie for many years to come. Alongside Ben in the movie are great performances from Owen Wilson, Robin Williams and Ricky Gervais, who yet again seems to be playing another David Brent character. Oh well, stick to what you are good at I suppose.

In true comedy style, Ben manages to capture emotion through his battle to earn the respect of his young son and his quest to keep the museum sane as it comes to live night after night. This feels like a classic Disney film really.

The way the movie has been shot to create real Gullevers Travel style perspective to the height of each model is spot on and is particularly good to see in the army scenes as Stiller is pelted with mini fireballs from mini cannons.

The DVD extras really just offer the standard sort of commentaries and behind the scenes outtakes you have come to expect.

All in all, this was a really enjoyable film and definitely one I will show to my daughter in a couple of years. The success is evident from the fact that there is a sequel due out soon and that is definitely one for the cinema.
