Customer A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master (DVD) Reviews (5)

A review of the fourth Elm Street movie, The Dream Master was originally produced in 1988. You can buy the region 2 DVD online for less than £5. Having previously defeated Freddy Krueger, the three surviving Dream Warriors are now living their lives peacefully and in a relatively normal manner. Kristen Parker, the heroine of the previous film, is now dating a boy named Rick and is good friends with his sister Alice, a dowdy girl who attends the same school. When Kristen starts getting dreams about the infamous house on Elm Street, she fears that Freddy may be back, but the other Dream Warriors resist the idea and insist that Kristen is simply traumatised by ... Another Freddy sequel and this time Krueger has met his match against the Dream Master(!) You can tell I said that sarcastically but actually, surprisingly, this is an enjoyable sequel with a swift pace. Freddy, again, is ressurrected by....erm....dog urine (humour is at a high here) and he gets revenge on the teenagers who killed him in the last one. Alice is a nerd who is never looked at by the school boys and her kick-boxing brother is always there to protect her. She is like a slave at home to her domineering father but deep inside of her, the rage is piling up. Eventually, she gains a special "dream power" ... Read the complete review

Whilst being the fourth film in the Elm Street series, The Dream Master was considered the second of a trilogy that began with the excellent Dream Warriors in 1987. Released a year later, and once again breaking the previous entry's box office record, Nightmare 4 set a new standard in special effects for the series. Kristen, Kincaid and Joey are the only remaining teenagers of the parents who killed Freddy Krueger. The boys are trying to forget that part of their life, but Kristen just cant stop having Nightmares. They are fearful that she is going to unwittingly dream him up again, and warn her that she has to stop using her dream power. True to form, ... Read the complete review

After a big return to form in part 3, part 4 is slighty disappointing. The three survivors of part three return, Kincaid, Joey and Kristen, but Kristen is played by someone else as Arquettes reputation had improved by now. At the start we see Kristen having a dream in which she thinks Freddy has something to do with it and she drags Joey and Kincaid into it. Kristen gets bit off a dog and still has the mark when she gets up in the morning, she goes to school and gets wrong off Kincaid and Joey (Joey can now speak after being a mute in part 3), they tell her off for dragging them in and tell her that Freddy couldnt be alive because they killed him. That ... Read the complete review

Having watched all the other Nightmare on Elm Street movies first, I came across this one in a second hand shop - and I must say, I actually quite liked this one. Firstly, it was great to see those fantastic characters Kristen, Joey and Kincaid from Dream Warriors back at Springwood High School. One thing I didn't like was that Patricia Arquette did not return to play Kristen, so the filmakers hired another actress, bearing absolutely no resemblance to Arquette, to play the part. I found this confusing and distracting. Despite this, Robert Englund was SPECTACULAR as Freddy, and a new string of characters were introduced – Alice Johnson, wonderfully ...
