When it was released, '9 1/2 Weeks' caused a lot of controversy, and was one of the most talked about films of 1986. Watching it now feels a little voyeuristic, but it can no longer claim to have the shock value it has 18 years ago, and I am sure the makers of film would never make that claim, as they know viewers have become a lot more broad minded. It was a ground breaking film in many ways, and it certainly paved the way to successful careers for the two stars Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke. This film tackles every fantasy you will ever have (unless you are a real pervert). Micky Rourke is sexy and dominating while Kim Basinger is curious and easily seduced. The film is about the relationship that they have which spans 9 and ½ weeks. She is seduced expertly and submits to sexual fantasys that he lays before her. Some of these are close to the knuckle e.g. at one point she is faced with a woman while he watches but she runs away. 9 1/2 weeks is basically a mildly erotic soft porn film masquerading as a thriller/drama/ actually I don't know what it was masquerading as! The plot if you can call it that is about Liz (Kim Basinger) a beautiful sophisticated New York art dealer who meets John (Mickey Rourke) a rich shady character who begins to get close to her by appeals to her sensual nature. There is always an element of danger in all the things he sets up for her as he gradually is supposed to be pushing her a bit further to reach sensual climax.
